Gen. 1 Intake silencer remove

Postby BLACK V6 » Tue Dec 08, 2009 4:19 pm

^^You also need to remove the snorkel located near the fender well. It's a white jug looking thing. Just follow the intake pipe to it. It will make the most difference.

I did remove the black pipe from the airbox to the white jug, I think thats all it matters(didn't have time to remove the white canister)

bigger than 2.75" will throw a check engine light at you

i know my reply is months late

also, 2.75" mandrel bent aluminized steel piping can be bought from jcwhitney.com, it's in the exhaust tubing section.

using a 3" pipe (or larger) will throw a CEL like i said, but it'll still be drivable...the difference will be that the A/F ratio will run a little bit rich (stuck in a warm-up loop) to prevent knocking (IIRC). this CEL supposedly can be fixed with a a/f re-tune (proof of concept found with the CP-E intake which is 3.5" and comes with a remapped a/f modulator, which prevents you from throwing the CEL)

also, if you want to make a cold air extension, you're gonna need to use 2.75" piping, as the 3" piping will not fit through the fender (without hammering out the engine bay), and 3" will also not be able to make the ~90 degree turn into the fender well (which you need to do in order to get the air filter to fit).

oh yeah, and the throttle body is sized to fit a 2.75" coupler....if you use 3" piping + a 3" coupler, then you're gonna have to figure a way out to get an airtight fit of the intake (in my case, with my 3" intake, i had to use two layers of rubber around the TB side of the coupler, in order to make it flush out to 3")

has anyone weighed in regarding keeping the stock fender tubing in place, in order to direct fresh cool air from the fender? i'm talking about the piece that can only be removed by pulling back the splash guard.

You can go 3 inch for the pipe after the MAF sensor but the pipe around the MAF has to be 2.75

Thanks a lot! Didn't think of using exhaust tubing, I was going nuts trying to find a 2.75" diameter PVC pipe. I'll use some of that to replace the black resonator that comes out of the throttle body.

My only problem now is that the throttle body is the only thing the intake is attached to, so occasionally you can hear the tip of the filter bouncing against the side of the engine bay. Its a minor annoyance but still...

You can definitely use any size before or after the MAF sensor.
Only place it matters is right at the sensor. But yeah like Frank
said, don't go bigger after the sensor. The change in the diameter
of the pipe will reduce the velocity of the incoming air.
It's like a reverse velocity stack, look up: venturi principle.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

i had 3in hooked to my injen short ram, before maf, cai and it disrupted the air flow, the tuner said air going from the 3in to the 2.75 was messing with the maf, like a ram air effect, and he was having issues with that setup, i lost between 4-6hp, depending on the tunning............... :drinking:
