Postby wooshkie90 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 8:32 am

Hey im thinkin about adding to my stock 99 SE V6 Solara so I thought id start under the hood first. Im leaning towards some sort of turbo kit. I dnt want the super charger because it seems like you gotta trike gold to get one for the Solara.I have quite a bit of mileage on it (180,000 kinda late to start) , but thats why im coming to you guys.

Do you think I should invest in a rebuild before starting the modifications, or maybe some specific services??

Also, how much money am I looking at spending to have the turbo kit installed properly?? Oh and does it matter that its an automatic??

Plz throw in your 2 centz. thx PEEECE!!!
Southern Cali does em best!

My 2 cents stick with intake and exhaust and find a new application unless you are ready to spend lots of money and time on custom parts. Also search for turbo threads.

You better have around $6k+ saved as a base, cause oyu will need rebuild off the bat.

X3

Or you could buy Rizal's turbo that's for sale, and all the work is done for you.

There is no 'kit' for our cars. Also, you sure as heck better have a fresh engine in there and a good transmission or else you're asking for trouble.

If you were to spend as much as you would have to for the turbo system, and not rebuild the engine...that would just be dumb.

SC is cheaper than a turbo, consider all the secondary/support work you'll have to do for the turbo.

there's like 2-3 s/c's for sale, there's gabe's m90 and even gabes 3mz hybrids.. with those options the power is MORE than enough and reliable. i'd say just stick to intake/exhaust and rebuild ur stock 1mz or do a 3mz hybrid. you'll be surprised how quick a stock good condition 1mz can be

edit: fixed my grammar, idk what i was thinking writing like that lol

I think I kinda started in the same boat that you're in now. Initially I considered going turbo until I realized how pointless it would be when the TRD s/c is a perfectly good option for less hassle.

Edit:
Here's what I've spent so far:
Supercharger: $2,000
Injen Intake: $150
Cold Air Extension: $80
Entire aftermarket exhaust plus installation (OBX headers & y-pipe, JP cat-back): $750
Fuel Mod w/ pump with install: $250
AEM Air Fuel Ratio Gauge: $180
Torque rod: $50
rough total: $3,460

I still need to buy NGK spark plugs and more motor mounts. Plus probably some other things I'm forgetting right now and expenses here and there that I left out.

Hope that helps give you a rough idea on what you'd be spending. You'd probably be spending at least that much just on the turbo alone.

Just stick 2 1MZs next to each other and put one on the front and back should be a direct bolt on.

I got it : a twin turbo supra engine with the rear end mr2 conversion hands down. with audi a5 headlights and a mustang's pipe is the way to go

turbo will definately cost you a lot more and will cause a lot of stress trying to customize all the parts. if your car didnt have so many miles i would say to go for it since projects like that are what keeps us going here.

rebuild the motor...u will be happier in the end
