exhuast tip size

Postby dkertis10 » Sat Nov 14, 2009 3:27 pm

so i was at autozone getting my check engine light read, and i was looking at exhaust tips since they were pretty cheap. mine looks pretty bad so i figured i'd buy one and bolt it on and maybe get a nice little sound with it since i dont wan't to do all the work of putting a whole muffler on. but i need an exact size of the tip, and on my solara v6 its an oval shape with, and from top to bottom it was like 2.5 inches and side to side it was 3.

has anyone put just a tip on their stock muffler? i just need the size of what works, i tried searching and couldnt find it. and do i need to meausre the inlet size of it too. would that be the size of the stock oval shape around? i know (think anyway) that the outlet size is the exhaust tip itself which i'm gonna keep under 3 inches so i don't look like a civic

any help is appreciated, i'm pretty clueless on this as you can tell

Go around to some local shops, see what they are offering in terms of getting old mufflers of their shelfs and labor, or if you bring in your own. Installing one is a sinch, cut & weld. (make sure you get a good lenght & the correct diameter inlet).

You can get some nice brands on ebay for CHEAP! Do not get 'NONAME' $30 ones though...I had a shop install a Magnaflow for $120 (Muffler + labor)...

It was a great sound, cant beat the price. Very low rumble, nothing raspy/ricey!

Theres a few catbacks that come available on the FS section every once and awhile since most of the good onces are discontinued. I had a Greddy EvoII in good condition that I sold to redgen1 so some ridiculously cheap price if I recall. But a bolt on Mag or Flowmaster is most likely cheaper...

I also have a Magnaflow muffler, I absolutely love the sound.
Never raspy and nice and deep. It took less than 20 minutes
for the shop to install and the cost was about 120.
The shop I went to did pretty awful job on the whole setup though,
so make sure you get what you want and go to a good shop.
Oh yeah, it's not too loud either, until WOT and then it
sounds SWEEEEEET! :D
Trust me, I'm a technician.

For those with the Magnaflow:

Are you guys using the universal mufflers that they sell?

^ Yes, magnaflow does not have any 'bolt ons' for the Solara.

I got this one:

Magnaflow 14827
2.25" Inlet (which is stock piping)
4" outlet & 6" long tip
Outside size of the muffler is: 5'' x 8'' x 14'' Oval Body

Looks like about 130$ on most sites

PICS (This is right after 1st install, I later had them push it forward and up...what you see in my orginal pics. It was very close to the bumper/paint, but never burnt/wore the paint...I guess because I washed/waxed my car a lot it helped)
http://www.solaraguy.com/viewtopic.php? ... =magnaflow

But check some shops, I basically got install for free, and my shop was cool about redoing it for my taste (originally it just showed too much chrome, they charged me 10$ to redo)

I didn't know the stock piping on the Solara is 2.25", so does that mean I don't have to upgrade my piping when I install the muffler?

Yeah I'm using a 2.5 in/out with a 4 inch angle cut Magnaflow tip.
I'm pretty sure the four cylinder has the same exhaust.
Maybe not though, but doesn't the TRD muffler bolt up to both?

^^Yea the TRD muffler bolts on to both I4 and V6.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I think the stock exhaust on my Solara might not be too bad after all. Changing the muffler would do absolutely nothing except the sound change.

There is so many mufflers out there but almost none (except the TRD) would make the throaty sound for my 4 cylinder.
