painting my own car and doing my own bodywork

I'm not trying to discourage you or anything, but it doesn't look so great to me. It's very wavy in front of the rear wheel like looking through water. The front fender looks kind of cloudy. There are all kinds of marks around the edge of the wheel well and there seems to be some junk in the cracks around the trim. Does that come out? Are you completely done with the panels you showed? The last picture looks pretty good though, nice and smooth, not wavy at all.

Despite all that, it does look better than I thought it would. I pictured something much worse.

The "Wavy" areas you see are called orange peel, its occur often during any kind of painting process, and He is going to sand it down later I would imagine. The specks of stuff are probably dust from sanding that has accumulatd in the trim crevices. I'm sure it will look great in the end, as most roller jobs are almost comparable to factory, WITH proper prep work and sanding/polishing techniques. Heres some examples of cars that have been roller painted:

At this stage it is good. You should be using wet sandpaper with a constant supply of water to clean the residue. 800 grit wet sand will go far. Working on small sections at time makes life easier. If it looks poor after 800 it will still look poor after 1000 and up.

It will look great if you take the time.

Thought "orange peel" was only with sprayed paint. But then again, until now I didn't even know you could roller paint a car, unless we are talking about Glidden or something.

Orange peel can happen to ny kind of paint. It is caused by: the paint isnt given proper time to dry in between coats, or if the air is too humid, or the temperature is to high, which is never ideal for painting anyways.

Any Updates for us man?

Its not perfect, but it certainly is waaaaay far from what people had expected. From the look of things it seems you are determined and IMO that's what counts. $50?? I paid 1200 for mine three months ago and its already fucke'n up. NEVER AGAIN!! :drinking:

OK, so where are the latest pics? This looks great, especially for a hand-applied paint job. What did you think of the process? How did your costs (and time) compare to a $300-500 paint job?

lol, just because you can colorsand the car very well, doesnt mean your base and top coats will be good.

when you colorsand, you are ONLY sanding down the clearcoat which has left the orange peel.

You still will need a smooth finish on the base.

all my friends are gonna hear about this one. lol.
goodluck!

this one definitely beats the RSX guy who tried to install sidemarkers using an exactly blade and home scissors.

I think it looks pretty good for a roller job and doing at yourself. Congratulations. I would love to see more when you finish it (colorsanding/polishing/waxing) I bet its going to look great. Keep it up.
