Dual TRD Muffler Exhaust Setup

Dual TRD Muffler Exhaust Setup

Postby SpeedySolara » Sat Sep 12, 2009 5:54 pm

I had two TRD mufflers installed on my Solara and it looks nice but sounds completely opposite to what it was cracked up to be. It sounds very raspy and loud. Theres also back pressure exhaust because the dumbass that did my exhaust made an "h" pipe rather than a y pipe. I'll get pictures and a video clip when theres daylight. Now I need your help to lessen the ricey exhaust sound I have so guys, PLEASE chime in. Below is my complete setup.

OBX Headers & Y-pipe (2.5")
Toyota Header Gaskets
Magnaflow High Flow Cat (2.5")
Stainless Steel Pipe to Mufflers (2.5")
*no resonator which will be installed*
h pipe to 2 TRD mufflers (WHICH HE'S GOIN TO FIX)

At the moment all the exhaust is pretty much coming out from one muffler because of this genius but like I said it should be fixed on Tuesday. one thing that cant be fixed is the fact he welded everything as one piece, including both mufflers so he ruined 2 perfectly new mufflers.

The mufflers arent necesarily "ruined", as a new flange can always be welded on. As far as the raspy tone, thats because you dont have a resonator. It will sound better, once you get one put on. I like the idea of having dual mufflers, but even with a y extension going to the second muffler, theres still gonna be more back pressure, than if you had just the single muffler. A TRUE dual exhaust setup, with a different pipe coming from each header would yeld the best gains.

Sounds like some resonators and an X pipe are in order.

A resonator will fix your problem.

like what Ilovemylara said, take off the original headers and put one muffler for each header, which is a true dual exhaust.

For those guys with TRD mufflers, are they loud or something wrong in my setup? I highly doubt a resonator alone will lessen this sound although its will make an improvement. Please fill me in TRD muffler owners. Thanks

The TRD muffler usually has a deep rumble to it, not loud, but not quiet either. Its about perfect to me.

Having no res and an 'H' pipe instead of a 'Y' pipe is what is hurting the system. I assume you actually have a 'T' pipe splitting the rear? The sound/ pressure wave will bounce back and forth between the front Y and the rear T through the straight pipe you have now. That is why a resonator works, it dampens the pressure wave, having a Y pipe in back will help to break up the "bouncing" wave you have now. Don't worry the sound from the dual muff should be great with a resonator and Y pipe.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

are in order or a good idea.

Are you running a single pipe back to a union? then T off or are you running dual pipes with a true H pipe?

Here is a Quick X pipe pict I made up for someone a long time ago
