cheap "flex" exhaust repair

cheap "flex" exhaust repair

Postby DrLove » Thu Sep 10, 2009 4:01 am

Before to sell my car, I wanted to make it "clean". The exhaust was leeking somewhere. I found that it was the "flex". I did a search on SG and found that we can just cut the flex and weld a new one. SO I went to a muffler shop and get quote for $120. NICEEEE... When I came back, he found that he needs to cut another joint, just before the cat, because it's leaking frome there too. Ok good... $250 total. Coool...don't mind if the car doesn't link anymore. Yesterday I go back to the shop, they can't weld the exhaust back because he can't find enough good metal to weld the exhaust back ???wtf??? So he said that I need a new y-pipe stuff WITH the cat.. Doh!! $760... Now I'm screw big time. $760 repair on a $3K car...

Anyway, I can't do much about that, except pay and get the f** out of that shop. It's maybe not them fault, but I guess they could know BEFORE to cut that they can't weld it back.

I was there at the shop for the flex repair, and they told me that they cant put it back, and that I need a new part, the Y pipe who come with the cat..so $500 more. $760 with taxes. I can't just take my exhaust and go back home with a straight pipe car.

i would take it somewhere else. It seems you just want this done and they have picked up on it, knowing you will do what you have to to get it fixed.

And go on the streets with no muffler at all? it's cut after the headers.. I kinda have no choice I guess, but I will take a better look at the "rust" piece to see how bad it was to make it impossible to weld. Im a big tall guy who can talk loud when Im not happy. FOr now Im just not sure if they are honest or not, so I dont want to be stupid and talk loud for nothing.

You can get a new Y pipe off ebay for about 320. Ours are expensive because they have the cat attached.

You want to do your car right so I dont suggest this but I was talking to my dad the other day and he was telling me about the true "hot rodder". Back in the 60s-80s when he had this problem and didnt have any money he would take a tin can (like a can of beans) cut the tops off, and make a slit down the side. Then he would wrap it over the exhaust leak and wrap two peices of metal hanger around them and twist till tight. I just thought it was pretty cool.

ouch...i woulda pulled my car outta that shop the second they said $700. i woulda driven it home without an exhaust, and then talked to the coworker asap.

btw, how bad was this second lead the mechanic told you about? if it was big wouldn't you have noticed? and if it's small, couldn't he have just patched it up, without having to cut the entire thing off?!?

sounds fishy to me...i hope it works out alright for you.

btw, i don't know how it is in canada, but here in the states, what midias said is right on, "You don't have to pay any work you did not authorize."

Hi guys, my car is still at the shop...yep!.. the stupid exhaust thing doesnt fit, it seems that my car is one from California, so the parts has a little "precat" on one end of the rear header.. so my car will be ready at lunch. Im kind of furious about all that, but I know that the guys try to repair it for real. I saw the old parts and that they try to weld it back, but it's like 2 old rust layers and they can't weld it back.

In fact it wa smy decision to go at this shop to repair the flex. The car had a "loud" sound and it was sometimes smeeling. It was a big issue to sell that car. A friend of mine come tonight to see my Solara, his GF really felt in love with my car.

I try the Mazda 6 2010 and I really love it. Im still negociate with 3 dealers to get the best price. If my car get sell for $3k Im gonna buy the mazda.

I will miss my Solara, this car has something that I really like. But I want something new to drive, more "safe" when we travel far away.
