High Flow Cat or Not?

High Flow Cat or Not?

Postby SpeedySolara » Thu Sep 03, 2009 5:05 am

I apologize if this is a stupid question/concern but it's early in the morning and I'm still half asleep. Anyway, I bought a high flow catalytic converter from ebay but the box just says Magnaflow Exhaust. How can I tell the difference from a conventional/regular catalytic converter to a high flow catalytic converter? Here's the link:

Compare the part number on the box to Magnaflow's numbers.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

Look into the cat. If you can see through it, it is a "high flow." If not, then it is a conventional cat.

If you don't have emissions in your state, then just rock a test pipe. I think New York does have emissions, but I can't remember for sure. I'm sure you would know better than I do :)

Not true Damon, most catalytic converters made after about 1996 were made with the catalyst matrix. It is a difference in the number of cells and the size of the cells that makes a cat High-Flow or not. But the difference in a regular vs. a high flow cat will only equate to about half a hp most of the time. A little more with a supercharger.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

hmm. The high flow magnaflow cat I have is super easy to look through and see light, while light cannot get through the stock cat I have laying around in the garage. Like I said, it has been a long time since I have run a cat since we don't have emissions here.

And I agree, it really won't make much difference.

I'm so glas this thread is here.
I have a obx y pipe that has a resonator. If I bolt this up and than install URD o2 simulator would I pass emissions here in PA? If I do install a "High flo cat" how much power am I really loosing?!

you guys know those oe cats are worth $$$ to recylce. You guys think there is a big difference running cat or test pipe? I've always heard its like a 1-2 hp diff at best.

yup, i remember hearing people waking up to there cat missing because of the copper in them. High flow cat vs test pipe isn't a big diff in power. Stock cat, maybe

I can't imagine it would ever be a difference you would feel. On a turbo car though, like a wrx for example, going to catless piping makes a huge difference in power. On a NA solara though, I don't think you would notice a thing.

i have a high flow cat on my silver solara, and i still got cel from the 02 sensor, they dont get hot enough with the 3.0, just put on the simulator, and where your test pipe goes have a muffler shop take your stock cat weld the flanges on it and bolt it on when you go smog, then take it off after and put the test pipe back on, thats what i do............. :drinking:

FYI: Catalytic converters contain the precious metals Platinum and Rhodium. Copper is super cheap compared to those. You can only get like $30-60 out of a catcon right now recycled.
