Few exhaust questions

Few exhaust questions

Hey everyone. I just picked up a Tanabe G medallion catback exhaust from Gabe(trd4life). I am going to be installing this today and I am extremely exited to see what kind of tone it will produce. I am sure that it will suit me but I am a person who likes to change stuff around.

When I was looking into the pipe that will bolt to the cat (midpipe?) the resonator had something that I would describe as fins protruding. If I made a new midpipe(?) to interchange and put.. say a thrush glasspack on it how would the sound change. Can anyone explain the differences between the types of resonators to me. I know of a glass pack but I have never seen one with these fins. I also have another muffler that I will make a new pipe for to interchange for my own experimentation, but I am more curious about the resonator. Thanks for everyones expertise.

Well there are basically two types of resonators, a "bullet type (usually aftermarket), and there are baffle types. A "bullet" type resonator has fins inside it. A baffle has a smaller pipe with mesh holes, surounded by sound deadening material, and the outer pipe. I woud sugest keeping the resonator that you have now, it will be less restrictive than a baffle type resonator, and you definatly SHOULDNT remove it. It wont sound good, if you really wanna do something make cat test pipe

The "fins" are probably louvers or half cups. These are there to allow the exhaust pulses (soundwaves) to enter the chamber filled with either fiberglass or stainless wool. This is for sound reduction. The loss in exhaust flow is minimal as pressure builds up in the outer chamber and exhaust flow will actually go over the cups. The sound pressure waves on the other hand will continue to enter the cups and dissapate into the fiberglass or wool.

So leave it on, you'll be fine.

Leave it on there will be no noticeable difference in performance just sound ( a little quieter) but if you want a perforated kind don't go thrush they rust really badly get a silverline stainless resonator. Mine are still spotless after a NY winter when my stainless Y pipe and exhaust piping have surface rust.

ok guys off topic but since we are talking about exhaust, does a muffler with some piping do any difference at all or is it just sound??

i believe when you reduce back pressure with a straight through flow you will have some gains its been proven the solara stock muffler is very restrictive i deffinetley feel a diff with mine

holy crap I am impressed. I looove this exhaust. I have an I4 and it gives it an awsome deep tone, great sound through all the gears. I think its the first time ever I had my radio off the whole time to work.

Ohhhhhh! Sound clips please. I'm excited and I don't even have one. Was it made for a certain car or was it universal?

sound clips will come eventually.. ill start a new thread to show the new updates to my car and it will be in there.

This exhaust was made for the solara way back when but not that many were made. People call it rare, i guess.. i am not sure how many others have the full catback.. supposedly they stopped making them because a problem with the canister or something.
