Oil change interval

Oil change interval

Postby Sparky5e » Tue May 12, 2009 9:32 pm

I know the manual says change the oil every 5K miles but I think it might be too much. Today I had the 15K checkup before I install the CPE Thursday. Anyway the performance was allot better after getting the oil changed. I messed up and wasted allot of money for a service plan because I hate dino oil. It breaks down too fast and doesn't protect like synthetics.

How often do you guys change the oil?

I know it's probably been brought up like the 93 octane but I didn't want to look through 213 pages or search results.

errr... try using the search button.. if you dont want to look through the search results, you'll never get an answer and be flamed.

IN MY OPINION, i change my oil every 3-4k. 5k is the maximum. 3k is the best.. but when i get lazy, 4k is where i change it.

I personally use Mobil 1 full syn with a Toyota filter and change mine every 5 k and rotate the tires every change, You pay more but more or less you're skipping an oil change so it balances out. Conventional oil only lasts 3k before its burnt.

I used Mobil 1 since from 15k on and recently switched to Royal Purple at 70k...always used 10W30 after factory fill. Always used Toyota oil filter except once I used a Micronics because I did oil change at shop, not dealer...always at 5k intervals. I am comfortable with that.

People tell me I'm crazy but I do notice a slight performance improvement (or lack of decreased performance) right after changing the oil. Since my car has the 4-cyl manual transmission combo, the change in performance is very noticeable when getting the car to move from a complete stop. With a new oil change, the RPM drop and vibrations that accompany it are not as noticeable as just right before the oil change.

just check the oil when you do the change... if its black, then change it sooner... if its still has sume transparency, then its still good... otherwise, you can use this as a guideline

for normal driving:
3k regular oil
5k synthetic oil

for agressive driving:
4k synthetic...

Should we include geographical locations/weather conditions?

I'm gonna use 5W-30 Mobil 1 full synthetic with the OEM filter and see how it goes. I've got about 83K miles on my i4 auto and weather conditions can be anywhere from 20-110 F. I've included 20 degrees since I do some mountain driving in cold areas.

Temp here doesn't go below 50-60F in the coldest record days. Its typically 90s topping 100s, but since its rainy its been stuck around high 70s low 80s.

Castrol fudged consumers up their holes long before Edge was created. Ever since they labeled their Syntec as a FULL SYNTHETIC and maintained high prices, any next generation product (Edge) with "better" performance would be priced even higher.

Thanks for the replies guys, especially since I knew this was brought up before. As I unclearly stated in my first post the search function yielded 213 pages to sift through. In the 2 years I have been here and 7 years on multiple forums I have learned that search functions for a generic question rarely finds exactly what you are looking for.

I am switching to synthetics from now on. Did this with my jeep for 115K on synthetics after I got tired of the way dino oil breaks down.

Off to install the CPE....WOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!

3K miles with valvoline 5w30 for the first 65K and then I went to max life for the next 105K no burning oil or consumption and still runs like a top. purone filter every time.

Yeah, if you are not going to purchase the Toyota Oil filters get the Pure One Micronics one...

I do want to emphasize, even if you are going synthetic, do not go past the 5k oil change intervals.
