reverse lightbulb should be easy. open trunk....remove panel covering corner of light. unhook bulb, detatch wiring, wire up new bulb, reinstall.

no unscrewing is involved, except the tiny screw-tabs that keep the panel on (hand-screwed, not screwdrivered).

i forget the bulb size...they should have a book in the lightbult section at autozone that'll tell you.

I made an interesting discovery over the weekend. My "chipped" key starts and runs the car, but can be taken out while the car's running or in ACC. If I put a spare non "chipped" key in, it won't come out, but the car won't start either. This discovery is good & bad. The good is I don't think there's anything wrong with the ignition switch, but the bad is I need a new transponder key, ASAP. I saw OEM ones on eBay that also give you a fob for cheap. I don't have the key code so I'm not entirely sure how they can cut a new key since I don't have an original and some are really worn. I wonder how much that costs to have it cut. These guys do give you directions to program the key as well, but I wonder if its as easy as that, or if you need a pro to do it, with equipment. It would be nice to have an extra fob, but I'm not so sure if I can just buy a key off eBay and it'll work just like the OEM one from the dealer.

does the car turn off when you remove the transponder key from the ignition, while running? b/c if it stays on, and no security features engage (steering wheel lock/no power steering, can't accelerate) then you could just tough it out.

it reminds me of my 82 datsun....the key can be removed while running, similarly, by sliding out in ACC, and it'll still run. no reason to fix it, since the car still works and no electrical features are lost.

BUT, if you HAVE to replace the key (or REALLY want to), then i'm sure the 'generic' instructions on reprogramming toyota transponder keys is available online, and you could probably check out the procedure before buying the key (to make sure you're comfortable doing it).

otherwise, i'd say go through the dealer. they have the transponder coded by vin, and should be able to do it (for $$), unless your ignition has already been switched out once (doubtful).

In my old Saturn the key would come out when the engine was running. It was kind of useful because one of my passengers would always need to run back into my house. Just pull the key out give it to them and turn around while they are inside.

Yeah, the car stays running without the keys although I've never tried driving it like that. I dunno, it kind of unnerves me! The previous owner did say you could hold up the "transponder" key to the fake key really close and the car would then start. To me its just asking for a world of trouble! I just bought a new transponder key & fob for like $20 on eBay, thought its worth a shot. They've got all the instructions on how to program, otherwise I'll let the dealership have some fun. They also said that the locksmith could do the programming, but I'm not sure about exactly how much of that they really can do. If this doesn't work then I'll just have the dealership get me a new key. I'm assuming none of the parts have been replaced as of yet. It just seems as though the guy went through a billion keys is all. And I only have one "transponder" key which makes me slightly nervous as well. I like having two sets.

#2 reminds me of this time that one of our company's keys got stuck in the ignition and won't go past ACC, and we'd have to leave it in there overnight... Almost every night for 2 months before the boss finally decided to take the damned thing in.
