You replace them when you need to; there's no set interval.

If you hear clunking in the rear and/or if it feels more bouncy, it's probably time to replace the struts.

this is something that you have to get someone to do correct? is it a little too hard to do it yourself?

One can do it themselves. I haven't tried yet, but I really need to, since I've driven on a TRD springs with stock shocks combo for about 10k miles now. From what I read in other threads, the rear struts are more of a biatch to change since one needs to pull out the rear seats in order to get to the them. And there's the ABS line you have to keep an eye out for. Other than that, you need a strut compressor, and to understand that the springs on the strut mounts can be dangerous, if not compressed securely before removing the top nut... or something like that. I'll be replacing mine myself in the near future I hope.

You can do it yourself, just make sure to set aside plenty of time if it's your first time.

And get something to support the wheel hub so it does not rip the ABS sensor out.

you could do it yourself, its not that hard, taking the interior apart is a pain, but I modded my rear panel to allow easier access, thus making it a breeze for me.
Geeks get it done, while Nerds whimper and call for mommie.

^ thats cool. I tried taking the interior apart last week, (i think i have a rip in my driver rear speaker cone) and i'm going to try to fix that. however, you can't get to the friggen rear speakers without taking apart the whole rear interior. ARHGH!!!
