Replacing Drum Brakes

Replacing Drum Brakes

Postby makethemusic72 » Wed Apr 22, 2009 8:12 am

Is it possible on a 2003 Solara to replace the rear drums with calipers and rotors? or is this a permanent thing? Newb question, I know.

Thanks, Tyler

Yes it is possible, and many people have done it. I've done it on 2 friends cars. :) You need the Calipers, Calipers brackets, backing places, and e-brake cables. Everything is a bolt on, and not too hard as long as you know the basics on cars. trd4life here I think has a couple sets laying around he can sell.

I made one got the Gen 5 Camry, but it;s different then your (my) car. If you really want to do it, I'll have Gabe (trd4life) contact you abotu the parts and cost, and I can write up a quick DIY for it to help you.

Have you worked on brakes before?

before you go and replace the whole thing, you can just tighten the hand brake... just ask someone how to do it... realy easy. If that doesnt work, then u could replace the whole system.

My hand brake works fine, I just think rear discs are sexier. but I'll do some shopping around, I'm not going to do it for about a year, I was just seeing if it can be done.

Thanks to all!

ya... my 99 has both pads and drums in the back... the drums are actually the disks and the hand brake goes inside of them

^ You have rear discs or rear drums. Not both.

I think all I4's had rear drums.

The solaras that have rear disks have drums as well
(in the "hat" portion of the rotor).....the drum is strictly for parking brake, and the rotor is for normal braking.

I've never seen a solara in toronto here without rear discs. Maybe its only a US thing?

Just go to a salvage yard and pick off a rear disc brake setup from a Gen 3 Camry wit a 1MZFE and ABS.

so wait, I may do something like this with my dads sienna if I get the parts for my avalon (and give him the avalon discs/pads) question, exactly what do you do with the e-brake cable? as far as i know siennas/solaras/avalons/camrys of this year are all pretty much the same. Is it complicated to do this swap?
are avalons supposed to be this fast?

So could someone clear this up for me... All solaras have 4 disc brakes? If so then i understand the drum would be for the parking brake.
