My sunroof blew off!

My sunroof blew off!

Postby LEE337 » Fri Apr 03, 2009 8:20 am

Well I now know that a Gen 1.5 sunroof will NOT fit a Gen 1!!!

I searched and searched the forum and found nothing about the 1.5 sunoof NOT fitting the Gen 1. The reason I'm telling you this is because mine blew off at a 110mph. So I called around to some salvage yards and found a 1.5 sunroof. I bought it for $175 and took it home. I get the headliner off (PITA) to find out that it bolts up differently. Im gona need the entire sunroof, not just the glass. When it blew off it took some of the trim with it so I cant just replace the glass. I dont know why the dam thing flew off but it did. I guess the seal was gettin old and it couldn't take the wind. My friend was playin with my camera so thats why I have a vid. The boom at the end is my sunroof flying off. Im glad that it didnt hit anyone!!! :D
Everyone with old sunroof seals should get theirs resealed if you have a lot of wind noise. The price of resealing a sunroof is nothing compared to a whole new sunroof. I let yall know how much more this is gonna cost me.

That's crazy, and even crazier that you had video going when it happened. Ditto on the open or closed question.

It blew off becuase the brackets are rusted to $hit. The gen1.5 roof should fit just fine...BUT generally, nobody ever replaces just the glass.

To me, that doesn't even look like a factory sunroof. Perhaps that is why the stock glass don't fit.

It must have been closed, because doesn't the sunroof go inside the roof when opened? Technically if it tore off when opened he would be driving a new convertible cause it would have taken part of the roof with it.

The brackets are very rusted that's probably the first cause and the second is that a suction was being created at such a high speed it created a vacuum and ripped off the glass.

Damn never heard or seen this before! GL with everything.

^^ i think the 'open vs closed' question was in regards to having the sunroof cracked (the 'tilt' setting, if you will). if it was fully retracted into the roof, then it probably wouldn't have flown off.

If you look at the last pic.....the rubber moulding sits on TOP of the roof, rather than flush with it...only aftermarket sunroofs are like that because they are universal. For the most part, cheaper aftermarket sunroofs open to the outside (similar to GM cars).

THE OEM part numbers for the pieces of the sunroof assembly ARE THE SAME BETWEEN A 1999 AND 2002!

You didn't put it on right.

Yea it looks pretty rusted and was probally the problem. I highly doubt that they are different between years cause there was no change in the dimensions of features of the sunroof. But dang man, i cant imagine driving be hind u and get smacked with a Glass sunroof on my hood... Be safe man.

And check out your CEL. Your engine is asking for help! hah

^^I second that. Your sunroof looks like its an after market unit. It has a different design. The actuator that kinda retracts a little as the glass slides is not even visible, from the photos you have. universal sunroofs also have ALOT of leakage problems , something that is also noticeable from all the rust that you have. None the less, it should NEVER fall off under any circumstances. Your best bet would be to replace everything, including the mounts and seals. simply replacing the glass would not do, at least for the long term.
