ok so this is my first post. hope i m doing it right.
i got a 99 solara 4 cyl auto with 120k on it. havent had any major problems on it so far but now i m a little consernd about my rpm needle. i drive 150 miles a day 95% is highway. after drivin abt 20 miles when i come to a complete stop my car vibrates a little so i put in N and i notice that my rpm needle jumps a couple of hunderd rmps up and comes back down and it keeps doing that till i hit the gas then it stop for about may be 15 sec and then starts again. i got my plugs changed about 5k miles ago. did an oil yest. put a new airfilter in about 2k miles ago. i dont know if this is a major issue or not but i really hate the vibration on a complete stop. i need help. i dont have a automotive background but do know i little bit here n there. so any suggestions on what i should do is greatly appreciated. thanks

I would guess your idel air valve is going or needs to be cleaned. It is located on the bottom of your throttlebody I would take the throttlebody off and clean it out with a can or 2 of throttlebody cleaner.

well ifyou dont knoe much about cars you probably dont want to take the throttle body off so here is an easier way to fix your prob because i had th same prob -disconnect the intake tube where it makes contact with the engine there is a flap valve in there if you have someone hold down the gas pedal it will stay open with it open spray throttle body cleaner every where i emptied the hole can alot of black stuff will come rushing out so if you value a clean driveway put some rags under the opening before you start when you are done spraying reconnect the intake hose nd start up the car it will be hard to start at first but keep krankin and it will start it will smell funky until it burns off the cleaner if you still have problems complete the process .let me know how it goes

It is my experience working with the IAC on the 5sfe engine you really need to clean the throttle body from both sides.

I had the exactly same problem with my '01 SLE V6 with 111k miles. Paid dealer $135 to clean the throttle body and adjust IACV. Now it is much better. Car was shaking like a WWII airplane at stop light. LOL

Cleaning throttle body is best to be left with professionals, otherwise you risk f*cking up things big time. There is the delicate MAF in the TB assembly.

The maf assembly is actually in the intake piping not the tb

If ur gonna do it, do it the right way, and take off the TB so u can clean it correctly. Dont half ass it. (I know that the gunk will burn up in the engine if u blow it into there by accident...but do it right).

it is safe to spray it in the tb that is what the cleaner is made for and before i did mine i checked with my certified mechanic and it was his advice that led me to do this.the engine will burn up any eccess left in there this is an easy fix .if you like taking your car apart then by all means go ahead it is a more thourogh cleaning if you just want to fix the problem spray arround behind the flange then you will see all the buildup coming out not to much will stay behind fluid will stay behind

^ Um, no.....

I've taken many TB's off on Camry's, and so has my mechanic.

If you want to clean it CORRECTLY, you unscrew it, and spray it. Don;t need to take it off the car, but you DO need to take it off the intake. Why spray more crap into the engine then needed?

crap, I was at my mechanic a few weeks back, and a customer of his came in an '00 I4 camry with a stickey throttle and bad RPM. He was busy, so I just used his tools and spent 30 mins taking off the TB and cleaned it. Problem solved, happy customer that will go back.
