Need Motor

Postby Loss4wrds » Tue Mar 10, 2009 8:03 am

I need to get a new motor for my 99 Solara. Where is the best deal, who has best warantee? If I go with a used JDM motor who is a good provider? Who really gets the best low milage motors from Japan?
Thanks,
Brian

Looks good! It IS a completely rebuilt engine. However, I say go for 3MZ-FE five speed manual combo! YEAH!

Get the motor and send the cams out to www.coltcams.com for a regrind and don't forget to install the obx headers before you put the engine in.

man... 1400 bucks + shipping seems a bit much when you could pull one from a junk yard for n more than 500 dollars. The 1mz-fe is used on very many toyota cars:
1994–2002 Toyota Camry
1999–2003 Toyota Solara
1994–2003 Lexus ES 300
1995–2004 Toyota Avalon
1997 Lexus RX300
1998–2000 Toyota Sienna

True but I'd be getting something with probably 80-120k mi or more with the age of the motor. That would at minimum need water pump, timing belt, tensioners, tune/clean up, and probably gaskets. This is probably the case with a JDM motor too and they are going anywhere from $700-$1650.
So far the best junk yard motor I have found locally was $750 it had 89K in the minivan and I had to pull it myself.

Found several rebuilt in the $3k range with 3yr unlimited milage warranty. Most of the JDM stuff has a 90day, some have 12mo/12k mi.
Basically I want to put something solid in and replace the clutch while I am at it so I'm golden for the next 60-100k mi.
Hoping to do all of this for less than $2500 and as little work on my part as possible. Will do the motor swap myself if i have to but would prefer not too since I don't currently have a shop or my air tools set up at the house I am renting. I'd have to go get compressor, tools, and engine stand out of storage. Wire up 220V for my compressor and borrow a cherry picker.
Not to mention what my wife would say about her 07 Camry sitting out in the driveway for a week while the Solara and parts are taking up the garage. But I've only got so much of a budget to work with.

hope to get most of the install work done in that $2500 budget.

What is the deal with the hybrid 1mz/3mz? 3mz block with 1mz heads? is that right?

Will it drop in and run with no other mods? I think I saw a 3mz short block for around $800 somewhere.

I heard the E153 is perfect fit for the 3MZ. Isn't the E153 the 5-speed manual for the 1MZ?

looked and looked today and couldn't find that 3mz short block for sale i ran accross yesterday. Had a buddy with an engine shop who said he would hook me up a couple months back when I found the sludge in the motor. But I called him Monday for a serious quote and I haven't heard anything back from him. Is't that how it always goes?
