Postby SolAraB » Mon Mar 03, 2008 11:17 pm

Whats up everyone. First of all thank you for takin the time to look at this. Now, i have had this problem for a while now and i have no clue what it is. The problem i am having is when i shift into reverse my reverse lights outside do not turn on.............now i saw this problem gradually take place from a while back. I have a 5-speed and at first everytime i would try to crank it into reverse it would only come on at certain times........it kinda seems like after i installed my twm shortshifter the damn lights dont wanna come on. is there a sensor for the 5 speeds that i should be looking at...........thanks to all in advance!

have you checked all connections? i dont think there is a fuse for reverse lights, not too sure on that though.
Let me go to my car later this afternoon and trouble shoot because I had a similar problem a while back when i installed my backup camera.

There is a little switch on top of the transmission it is probably bad mine went bad one morning. I got a new one at advance auto for about 26 dollars. It takes a big socket to remove it about 1_1/16 or so. Look on top of the trans under the intake piping remove the electrical connector put the trans in reverse and check for continuity (only 2 pins) if the switch is an open it is bad. The switch is mechanical so that could be why your only works sometimes.

Hey guys,

I have pretty much the same problem... 2000 w/ 5spd and TRD shortshifter. Now, my reverse lights haven't worked for years, but I just found this post to try to tackle it.

I went to Autozone, got the part, put it in, but still no reverse lights. The bulbs themselves are good, they were just replaced.

Now, I pressed in on it to make sure it works, but not that hard. Is it possible I broke it? Is it possible this has something to do with the shortshifter? Is there a fuse somewhere I'm missing?

I tightened it as much as I could, but it's a difficult angle. Would it possibly help to take off that washer it comes with to get it a little deeper in the transmission? Perhaps the problem is that whatever's supposed to be pressing the sensor in the transmission isn't reaching. Could that damage the transmission if it's not a clearance issue?

^Did you try taking off the connector and putting the trans in reverse and checking continuity to see if the switch in closing?

I'm sorry, but I didn't understand what that part meant. Do you mean like with a circuit tester on the sensor? Or am I looking for something down in the hole that I'm assuming leads to the inner workings of the transmission?

Sorry, I don't believe I've messed with sensors before, at least not like this one. Thanks.

Nice avatar btw :)

you are just looking for continuity in the switch. When you shift into reverse a switch closes and lets the current go to the lights. I don't know which of the prongs are which, but you would just put the leads on the prongs and see if the continuity changes when you shift into reverse..like a light switch - on/off

OK, here's a weird one.

I noticed the other night that when I shift my 5spd into reverse that I'll get a little blip of light from my reverse lights on the way into reverse, but when I'm all the way in, it goes away. This wasn't happening before, I'd have no reverse lights at all.

So basically, to get the lights to come on, I'd have to be in reverse and push the stick up a bit as if I'm going into neutral or 5th and the lights come on. Or I can pull the stick down toward me and the lights come on, but when I let go, they go of the shifter, leaving it in reverse, they go away. They simply won't come on when I let the stick sit in the reverse position that I actually use.

Could this be that the sensor needs tightening? Or is my Shortshifter installed poorly?
