Gen 1 V6 Stuttering Engine

Gen 1 V6 Stuttering Engine

Postby mightymouse402 » Wed Dec 31, 2008 7:43 pm

Hello all,

Just recently my car started doing this stuttering thing when I press the gas to accelerate. It usually happens when I'm cruising at a steady speed and press the gas to accelerate past a slow car or to just speed up. It has slowly been getting worse, and today the check engine light came on and it is not turning off. Can anyone give me some insight as to what is wrong? Any helpful responses are appreciated.

Happy New Year All! :)

hhmmm...how's the idle? Has gas mileage gone crappy? Plugs and wires? Crappy gas?

I would start by getting the engine light code.

get an OBDII scanner from autozone, have them read the codes.

Sounds like you need a tune-up (sparkplugs, airfilter, fuel injection cleaning...etc.) How many miles on your Solara?

check the CEL first and then we can fully diagnose the problem.

but I am guessing that you're running lean for some reason when you put load on the engine to accelerate. This could be related to a number of things such as your fuel system or maf.

I don't really have the money to buy one of those OBDII scanner things. I just wanted to see what you all thought it might be. Thanks for the responses so far and I hope they keep coming, I'm taking it to my mechnic tomorrow, I just wanted to maybe come to him with some possible suggestions. Thanks, this board is the best.

again Happy New Year to all of you. :D

Just take it to autozone or some place like that that scans codes for free and besides a code reader only cost about 30 bucks

^^^ Yup, just like he said. Autozone rent's it out with a deposit, and you'll get your deposit back when you return the scanner. Good luck bro!

your mechanic should have the scanner, if you're close he'll scan it for you free.

this might be caused by so many things, slipping belt, bad sparkplugs, blocked fuel delivery system.

If you dont have $$, empty your tank gas and fill it up with the best octan gas (94 or 91) and drive on higher rmp for a while. My check engine light up once and was gone after 1 supreme gas full.

good luck

i tried to ask the autozone near my house if they did the scan but they don't. my mechanic does not have the scanner, he is more of a mom and pop mechanic. he is going to change the spark plugs and he just changed the fuel filter of the car and cleaned the throttle body. he is going to change the spark plugs next week, i guess i just have to deal with it for now. although i did just find out that the previous owner of the car put the wrong type of spark plugs in the car. they did not use the double electrode ones, it was only a single. hopefully a spark plug change will remedy the problem. i am going to stop by the local mechanic near my house today hopefully he can do the scan for me. maybe i'll post up the codes if i get them. thanks for all the responses. more are always welcome. :D

Thanks!

I had the same problem with exactly the same mileage. For me, it was the EGR. It kept getting stuck open or closed - don't remember which. Luckily it was a pretty cheap and easy fix.

That happened last year with mine too....excessive flow CEL, gas mileage was awful. I was about to order a new one, but i had a bad negative cable on the battery, so the ecu reset itself....the CEL went away, haven't had one since. Been running just fine for almost a year

Hmm... Too bad you can't just paper clip the harness and read the codes by the flashes. Anyhow, that's how the Hondas work. I'm also a 5th Gen Prelude owner.
