does anyone else hate the how the tail light looks at night on the gen 1s. they should have made the whole red part of the housing turn on not just when you brake. is there any way to mod this??

Gen1 tails turn red at night.
The 3 watts filament is lighthing all the time at night,
and the +-20 Watts filament is lighting when you brake.

Im now with my smoke altezza from Latin. I will maybe go back to Gen1 after the winter. I polished my Gen1 tails with PlastiX, they look brand new ...
just like in 1999 lol. :D

When my Gen1 tails wa son the car, I ve put "white" turn signal.. not the "hyper white" blue cheap light, a regular white.. it was looking good, I prefer that over the amber color.

im talking about at night...the only part of the tail light that is lit up is that little piece of the red housing. it wouldve looked better if the whole red part of the housing stayed lit and not just when you hit the brakes.

It shouldn't be difficult to fix what you perceive is broken. I don't have a genI tail light to look at but will assume the brake light portion has a single pin light socket for the single filament brake light bulb. If you swap out the single pin socket for a dual pin (any auto supply store) you'll be able to use a standard 1157 dual filament bulb as used with most combination running/brake combo tail lights and front turn signal/running lights. That'll allow you to light the entire housing at night and you'll still have a nice healthy brake light. All that for less than ten bucks probably (including bulbs) and not all that much work.

Cheers

i havent looked at mine. but i noticed it on my friends solara when driving behind him at night. the only part of the housing that is lit up is the part i circled in the picture. i'd like to know if there is anyway i can mod this so that the whole red part of the housing is lit up all the time. thanks

That's kinda odd.. I'm suspecting that what you see is reflection from your headlights casted onto that part (it's only a relfector) and he may have a burnt out bulb, because in normal situations it would cast a light from the center of the light all the way to the edge on the left, and kinda where both the transparent and the tail ends on the right (before meeting the side reflector).

There is only ONE bulb in gen1 tail lights (not including signal or reverse), and its the equivalent to an 1157 bulb.

The whole housing does light up, as shown in the video above.
