transmission fluid

transmission fluid

Postby Chinky420 » Mon Sep 29, 2008 8:24 am

hey guys, i ran a quick search and didn't find anything jumping out at me, so i figured i'd ask here (plus it's been a while if this question has been asked before).

i was reading in my haynes manual on doing an auto transmission fluid change. in the front of the manual it says to use a dexron III fluid, but when i was at autozone this weekend, i found the dexron 6 and the only thing that held me back from getting it was the fact that the back of the bottle said it was mostly made to be compatible with GM cars.

i was wondering what fluid was used, for those of you who have changed their auto trans fluid.

thanks all,
~k

ok, ok....

so now that i've read that aa1 article, what do you guys know about our trans fluid filter?

according to the haynes manual there are three magnets inside the drain pan, and those need to be pulled and have the metal shavings cleaned off....but i don't recall seeing anything about a filter that may need cleaning/replacing.

as far as process goes, lemme know if this sounds about right to everyone.

unbolt drain pan via two bolts on underside of trans pan (similar location to oil pan, but on driver side).

drain old fluid

unbolt pan, clean with new/clean trans fluid, and clean magnets

reattach trans pan to bottom, start filling ATF from top (ATF intake is near steering assemb., in the little container that says dot-4 approved only).

drop ~4.5 to 5 quarts of AT fluid.

yes....no?

this is my first trans flush, so i want to make sure everything is straight before i start the process, and forget something.

thanks

If ur dropping the pan, u might as well replace the filter/strainer while ur in there.

you can't truly do a flush without the machine they use at trans shops where they disconnect the return line. you can however come close by doing the procedure you described but you need to drain and fill several times to get most of the old fluid out and new fluid in.

with the car up in the air drain as much as you can top off. start car and run it through all the gears manually. no need to give it any gas. keep in mind the be gentle as you are being supported by jackstands. stop turn off engine, drain and refill. do this 2 or 3 times and you should have a majority of clean fluid.

+1
my filter was all crusty, and discolored and looked like crumbling cork
definately replace that filter
you can get it at autozone and its pretty cheap. I think i paid like 25 bucks for mine.. or something to that effect ( i bought alot of crap that day )

oh and the magnets definately need to be cleaned off. I had LOTS of metal shavings on mine ( auto tranny abuse? :o ). We also cleaned off the pan thoroughly before throwin the magnets in.

ok, so then, to get to the filter, will it be accessable when i drop the pan, or do i need to look in a third location (like with the oil filter)

and are there any specific brands recommended, or should whatever the autozone ppl recommend be alright?

tracy....i'm guessing i'm going to have a lot of metal shaving too....auto tranny abuse....right now it's to the point where i'll accel up the gear, then the car will hesitate at the top of the gear before it shifts......def not good.

thanks everyone who's helped out

the filter is rite there when u drop the pan. its held in by i think 3 bolts...check the haynes manual it has specific steps and torque specs.

U should go to toyota and order the filter, itll cost about what itll cost @ autozone. And if u go to the toyota parts place, and they tell u there is no filter, just tell them that u know there is and it might be under "strainer" Their system shows them visual parts when they enter in ur car's vin etc so he WILL find it, bring ur haynes manual as well to show them. Ive had 2 dealerships tell me that there was no filter, and then Adam (ASG14) got it for me from his dealership.

ok, one last quick question: is our differential housing separate, and if so, should i change the fluid in there while i'm at it (135k miles on my lara, last fluid change at 90k); or is it unnecessary at this point?

whole task took about 2 hours. car runs much smoother now, with no gear slippage at the top of the gear.

my magnets were filthy, and i even had a few little chunks of metal (probably not good). cleaned it all out and can feel the difference.

autozone had the strainer for 19.99, parts dept at the dealership had it for 33.xx and they would have to order it.

couldn't get ahold of the royal purp atf max, so used valvoline max life 75000+ mile atf fluid. we'll see how it holds up.

thanks guys, ya'll answered any questions i had (or would have had) in advance, and i was able to go straight through it, without any problems.

....well, aside from spilling some dirty atf fluid on my driveway
