brake pad change

brake pad change

Postby mettler » Sun Jul 20, 2008 3:39 am

Is it typical to only change the front brake pads before having to change the back, or do the back and front wear at the same rate?

thanks

not 100% sure, but i dont think they wear out at the same rate.... the front go with the pedal brake, while the rear go with the hand brake. Correct me if im wrong

The front brake pads would wear out faster than the rear pads, your car's braking is mostly done at the front. But the brakes are all running off the pedal. the parking brake ( e-brake) for our cars is a seperate mechanism. You'll go through 2-4 front brake pad sets before you change out the rear pads.

^ you're wrong.

80% of braking is done by the front, 20% rear.

I went to the dealer to get rear pads, and they gave me fronts. I went back and the guy said "solaras rarely need the rears changed, I thought you made a mistake asking for rears."

Dood, no mistake, I need the rears.

The local dealer, kragen, and autozone prices were roughly the same.

as much as I have changed brakes in my car I can never figure out an easy way to get the brake-cylinder back into the brake assembly so I can get the caliper back on the rotor.. you have any tricks for that? I usually just slowly push it back in with a little pry-bar sort of thing. Yes, I have the cap off the brake fluid under the hood.

^^^I use one of these vise-grip c-clamps:

Auto parts stores also sell kits specifically designed to compress the brake cylinder, but they basically do the same thing and cost more.

You can clamp the rears in? I thought u had to twist them in? There's 4 notches on the piston, supposed to use the piston turning tool (autozone and kragen let u 'rent' them for free). I use needle nose pliers.

Odd my rear does not have 4 notches. Usually if they have notches that is for the emergency brake but I have a drum inside disk emergency brake and a standard piston.
