torque rod adjustment

I recently purchased Jim's torque rod for my lara (thanks to javajoe) and am having some trouble adjusting it. It seems that everytime after the car has been sitting for a while that when I start it moving forwards the torque rod is knocking around. I have not tried the washers on the bottom bolt yet, but it seems there must be something else going on. Any help is greatly appreciated.

is ur rear motor mount good?

I am not sure considering the car has 115k and I am the second owner. How would I know?
By the way, the noise seems to have only started since I installed the torque rod.

The only way i see that the torque rod will make noise is

1) u didnt tighten the bolts to the bracket on the engine enough

2) when u installed the torque rod, one of ur other motor mounts (most likely the rear motor mount) isnt doing its job and is causing slack so then after u drive that torque rod is actually holding the engine in an awkward position since the rear motor mount was slacking.

My torque rod only knocks if it's tightened too much. For daily driving, it shouldn't be 100% taught when engine is idling. I also recommend the lower spacers since they help to keep the lower end from excessive movement.

It should only make a slight knockin' noise when changin' from "P" to "D".
That's the only knockin' noise i get from my Torque Rod.

also, put washers (or some sort of space taker) on the bottom bolt to restrict the movement

when i initially installed the tq rod, i didn't use anything to brace the bottom of the tq rod (at the heim joint), and every time i would check it out, the tq rod would have moved left or right....which presumably is not good for it

also, check that the height of the torque rod is good, if it's too high or low then it's gonna stress your transmission. the way i did it, was that i just set it up to the height that the trans sat at (w/ the engine off), with out that shock/support on it (seems to be a good place). that way it just doesn't move from the place it's at when you turn the car on/off.

I will try the washers on the helm bolt as soon as I can and look into the adjustment of tightening or loosening the top bolt (unless there is another way to adjust it or a better method than trial and error). Thanks for the help so far.

What I did was adjust the bottom bushing and nut so it was snug at the plate but not pushing the engine up then bring the top down the same way and tighten that up. It worked out just fine.
