Torque Converter

Torque Converter

Ive searched briefly and havent found much but after a bit of research online it seems that our Torque Converter for us Auto guys may be a weak link. Does anyone know how strong our torque converters are? How about where to get upgraded ones? Where on the car is the torque converter located?

You were too fast Dawg ! I was about to refer the same exact link.
I'm thinking to make it for my U151E (Auto 5-speed Gen 2 V6 tranny).

They ask to send them the parts....they modified them and send it back to you. I'll ask them about bring my car there and make the job. Will have to stay some days in NJ. For around 1000$ you have a good upgraded tranny. They would work with your valve body (VB) for stiffer shifts and customize your torque converter to elimnate some tranny power loss.

For serious performance, the tranny rebuilt is around 3500$ as Tony the Tiger did with his Camry (now running around 460 whp).

Mr_Chunkz to help you figure it out yourself. Like you probably know already, the manual tranny have a mechanical lock between engine and the tranny...on the auto tranny, it is an oil link turning in a turbine like wheel. It's why you always have some effeciency lost, because the link between the engine and the tranny is never completely locked. Nowadays, some auto tranny use a mechanical lock went they reach a certain point.

Heat build up is the #1 reason for auto transmission failure. Never run without one!
Tony is running ALOT more hp than most.
Got Boost?? :sweet:

Totally right ! That's why the upgraded valve body (VB) with stiffer shift create less friction...so less heat.

By the way...there is the Tony the Tiger testamonial regarding IPT rebuilt tranny

I am not sure the torque converter is necessarily a weak link, but the flywheel/drive plate certainly is. I'll also throw in the tranmission pump.

Some of you know me from Club Lexus with my RX300 and this was a thread that I did last November/December after I had to take out my transmission to replace a fractured transmission pump and it has a lot of commentary and pictures. As most of you know we share a similar 1MZFE engine and a similar automatic transmission in the case of the 2wd, but the 4wd U140F is not that dissimilar.

http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?t=320390

There is a guy down there in Mexico City who is friend of my uncle's who was an absolute master in transmissions and found a few ways to strengthen the tranny, not on the order of IPT (which I eventually plan to go to in the future when I get some more $$$ and time), but he managed to also have a friend of his modify the torque converter as best they could with what they had. That particular modification eventually pulled me to a record vehicle speed in the 1/4 mile. Basically, acceleration was better throughout the acceleration rather at the beginning or at the top end. One other thing I did after returning to the United States in April was to switch over to Amsoil ATF.

Quote from tony on his trans

There are two ATF coolers, one is a B&M Hi-tek cooler and one is a B&M 11" x 4.5" x 1.5" cooler to keep ATF temps in check.
