CAI Bypass Valve

CAI Bypass Valve

Postby CamryOnBronze » Mon Mar 31, 2008 6:45 am

With all of the people buying the CAI extension right now, I thought this product/article would be a good thing to post up. I have heard of a lot of people running the CAI extension in their solaras, but I have never heard of someone using the AEM Bypass Valve.

I have been reluctant to run a CAI ever since I got into tuning since I always had a fear of hydrolocking. This looks to be pretty effective from SCC's test, so im going to pick one up before I install my CAI.

Ill let everyone know what I think and how it works out when I have it installed, but I thought I would open a discussion about it and see if anyone else is running one.

How could the bypass get sucked into the pipe? it functions in place of a coupler...

oh wow, I just read that thread... nevermind then. I really dont want to run a CAI without some sort of water reassurance, I guess I will have to keep looking for a solution...

Here is the warning not to on AEM's site:

Q: Can I use an Air Bypass Valve on a forced induction engine?
A: Do NOT use an Air Bypass Valve on engines equipped with forced induction (turbo or superchargers). The increased flow demands created by the forced induction could damage the valve and lead to engine damage.

Noob mistake, my bad

It just occurred to me that not everyone getitng the CAI extension is boosted, so the info is still relevant to them. This looks to be a really nice product- I wish it could be used with boost as well.

I have an injen intake with a cai extension. Theres a local ricer shop that had pipe extensions and bypass valves. I went in got the 90 degree extension and went ahead and got the aem bypass valve. I haven't had any problems with the bypass valve and it is good reasurrance that you wont suck up any water.

Just about the best you can do is a filter sock and shield.

im actually thinking about getting a custom air box made so that it can only suck up air fowards and aimed up and the rest is blocked off. I figured if i can have the induction chamber suck air toward the front of the car it would be better anyway to catch the airflow coming from the bumper and it will protect mainly the bottom of the filter from getting wet. Anyone else have this idea?

it seems like water could come from the front side just as easily, but maybe not... tough call.

it doesn't matter if the filter gets wet- that won't hydrolock your car

the only way to hydrolock is to have a wave of water...not a splash....but an entire wave of water cover the filter, or go through a puddle high enough to place the majority of the filter in.....

regardless of shields or whatever...you're still screwed

so long story short- either run the cai or don't. if you will stress excessively over it, then don't run it. I've personally seen a couple of hydrolocked cars from having a cai....but the drivers were idiots and drove through stupidly deep puddles during hard rain.

I've been running mine for a good 5 years now and no problems through a lot of rain. my old filter used to get soaked sometimes though, in heavy rain or slush and it would make the engine stumble, but with my new filter, it doesn't.

I know what youre saying king, but it doesnt hurt to take precautions if they are out there. I dont really anticipate it being a big problem and I sure dont drive like an idiot, but if there are products out there that could help and theyre under $50, Im sure gonna give them a shot- for better or worse
