Manual Transmission problems

Manual Transmission problems

Postby alltrac92 » Wed Mar 12, 2008 7:00 pm

I have a 2000 V6 5-speed and 1st gear is near impossible to engage when downshifting from second to first around 5 mph. It will make a grinding sound but it does not sound like the transmission but more from the shifter area. First gear will engage easy at a dead stop. Also in the morning when the car is cold first to second is hard after it warms up no problems.

I changed the gear oil to Royal Purple and it did not fix the problem. Is there a better gear oil for this issue? or some adjustment? I did notice the clutch pedal has worn a spot on the factory floormat so I wonder if the clutch is not fully engaged? but all other gears are fine.

Probably the sychros.

My friend's 240SX does the EXACT same thing.

there is no first gear synchro....that is to prevent you from dropping into 1st while cruising by accident and blowing your tranny. better to grind the gears than to engage them at high speeds

you shouldn't have the problem getting into second gear though

Nope, I just bought it like that. Would a worn synchronizer be more noticeable when the car is cold versus after a few miles of driving? Because after the car warms up the transmission is fine. Maybe I should try the GM synchromesh. Do you guys run full synchromesh or mix it with gear oil?

I am not sure anyone here uses the GM stuff. Most use straight gear oil usually royal purple or Mobil 1.

When you say "from 5 mph" do you mean from 5 mph as in from hard braking or from coasting speed?

Give the gas pedal a slight goose before you downshift to first. A VERY slight goose.

Also how many miles did the transmission have before you did the gear oil change? If it had high mileage, changing the oil might actually have done more harm than good.

if you think that the synchromesh might help, give it a try for sure....I know a couple of camry owners that have tried it with good result

same as pretty much any manual transmission driver who has tried it

I wouldn't recommend using a GM Syncro. My 2nd gear syncro went bad in my camaro I had.

+1 on the syncro thing....your tranny is fine, nothing to worry about.........
but if you want to improve the overall feel, try.............
Redline MT-90!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Made my tranny shift like new. I used to get a slight grind every once in a while when shifting too quick.....and after reading a thread on here, I swapped in Redline MT-90 and never had the problem again no matter how quick I shifted! Also it made cold shifts much smoother!

I guess you and I are the only one's that still do that! I'm suprised that some of you downshift to one! Amazing... Downshifting to 2 or 3 or 4 i can understand. But to first gear...sorry...for the :agrue:
