Power Steering Fluid

Power Steering Fluid

Postby Solorange » Tue Mar 04, 2008 6:37 pm

My steering wheel got tough to turn twice today. Like as if I had no power steering. Hopefully my power steering pump isn't on it way out. Its working fine right now, but I checked the power steering fluid level and it was exactly on the min. level for a cold engine when then engine was hot so I went out and bought some power steering fluid. The car manual says to use Dexron II or Dexron III automatic transmission fluid. At auto zone they didn't have anything that specifically said Dexron II or Dexron III. They had Mobil or Castrol Dexron IV and they had a universal Castrol Import ATF good for all Toyota's, hondas and nissans. I wasn't sure if either of these were ok so I bought this stuff. It says its equivalent to Dexron, Dexron II, and Dexron III. But it looks like its made for GM's and Fords. It seems kindof shady. But I figured I check with one of you guys first before I put it into my car. Or is there something else I should get instead?

As far as I know honda is the only one who requires special fluid (mineral based not dino). Personally I use valvoline max life fluid.

I went to autozone to return what I got and get that valvoline brand. They advised not to use that because there is a extra additive they put into it for the "high milage max life" thing. They said it could contaminate the current power steering fluid if all these chemicals are mixed. I do know that what they said can be true in some cases. Not sure if it would apply in this case or not so I didn't get it. When I was dropping my car off at the dealership I asked the parts dept. what they sell for my car. The guy showed me the bottle of what the service uses which was NAPA "power steering fluid" It didnt even mention it was equivalent to Dextron II or Dextron III. So I didn't get that either. Im somewhat surprised they use that. I think Id probably be ok with what I got seeing what options I have lol.
