Problem with 'sport shift' mode, 2006 SLE Conv

Postby highball » Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:14 pm

My wife and I just got a 2006 v6 SLE Conv and were driving around and noticed a curious problem with the sport shift mode. We could downshift all we wanted (i.e. we could pull back to the - and shift from 4-->3-->2, no problem. But, the shifter would not let us upshift to the +. It literally feels like there is something blocking the shifter from moving past the middle. Is this normal? I guess we can always downshift, throw it back into D then back to S mode again, but this seems too convoluted. Thanks for your help.

No, that's not normal. You should have it checked out. I guess it's possible that there is something lodged in there, you never know.

Thanks for the quick replies! We're still under the factory warranty, so this should be covered. Always frustrating to find a problem so early on.

This is true, but it does sound like something might just be lodged in the shifter, or like the other guy said something loose.

Good luck, and Image

The whole center console just pops off I believe if you want to check and see if something is obviously wrong before you take it in.

Yeah but to pop it off, you need first to remove the dark gray square at the top right of the shifter plate...then you have to start poping it off from the middle of the car, you know where you put your elbow...open this lid and you'll see the demarcation line. Go slowly (not too much tho) and it will go fine.

I don't know guys, If that were me and I had a warranty left, I wouldn't touch it. I would just take it in. No sense in ripping things off if you have warranty left.

Check out the pics in the Gen2 Tutorial for AUX2Car. 3 min., no tools and you can see if there's a petrified french fry jamming up the works. But really I don't think you'll see much taking the console apart. Just the vacant space around the trans mechanism. But it's still all covered.

Took it in to the dealer today and they found a rogue piece of plastic lodged in there. Glad it wasn't something more. Works great now, although I wish the transmission would shift gears a little faster ;)

I'm happy you found the problem. In case you were wondering, it isn't just your tranny, we have what may be the worlds most lethargic 'sport' shifter.

Unfortunately, unlikely Chevy or Ford auto transmissions you might have grown up with where you could just slap in a 'shift kit' that option isn't available to us. TRD does not make and has no plans to produce one, at least according to an e-mail exchange I had with them several months ago.

Cheers

Hey guys -

I've been gone in Miami Beach all week and just got back or you KNOW I woulda responded sooner! :)

SOOOOoooo - I rented an '07 Solara Convertible while I was there and drove a couple hundred miles - what a POS it felt like after driving my modified Solara!! And yes, the sloppy-shitter (shifter) was just as anemic as mine, so at least I know it's an overall design flaw and not just because I've modded my ride too much! :-?

Suxass. :(

Why'd you rent a Solara convertible and not a 6 series convertible?????????
