Cleaning under the Hood

Cleaning under the Hood

I just had a light bulb question.

Is it possible to clean / degrease under the hood? Is there a place like a gas station auto shop that can do this or can I just buy the stuff and do it myself?

And does it actually help?

....by light bulb question you mean.......? a light went off in your head to ask a question, or what?

yes it is possible to clean/degrease under the hood... usually simple green works good if you want to do it yourself.

otherwise you can also goto a detail shop and pay to have your car detailed inside/outside and under the hood.

it helps a little bit...in that it reduces the amount of gunk that prevents your engine from dissipating heat. but more importantly, it looks good to have a clean engine bay.

now what any of this has to do with light bulbs....i don't know. you should clarify that part.

i think its a good idea to clean the engine bay every other wash you do. definitely capable of doing it yourself, only thing I would recommend is cover the alternator with a rag of piece of plastic. looks ten times better. I have a racing buddy who says that the engine bay should be the cleanest part of the car. whether you agree or disagree it's up to you.

^^ i agree that it's the part that should be getting the least dirty....as it is exposed to open road conditions the least (at least, in smaller proportions)....

and if you clean it every other time you wash, then it should definitely be the cleanest part of the car.

shoot, but i'm doing good to clean out the interior of the car on every other wash....i haven't really touched the engine bay, except for here and there, since i bought it two years ago...but it came fully cleaned when i bought it, so that helped.

I'm a guy that always used rags (cus i was afraid plastic bags would melt under the hood). I fried the ecu in my camry, did everything by the book (been doing it for 10+ years). I usually cover up the fuses, alternator and belts by rags, then use simple green..then go back with a toothbrush..and get it best i can, spray some more and then wash it. I think there is a kit you can buy its called engine details, it makes everything sparkle, i've used it, was happy with the immediate results, but it dries off quickly and your back to your regular looking engine bay. Stay safe.
