^^ Its like talking to a drunk person, you never get the details.

Tell us more. What you said is not really enough to get a clear answer.. for what you told me I conclude:

Your car sucks
Your tranny sucks
You broke it yourself
The car has too many miles
You forgot to change the tranny fluid
Its your driving that wont engage
Thats what you get for driving an auto
The light is your enemy.

I can go on.... Give us more specs man.

Not being rude. Obviously with a question like that the person who post it could have came out with the same possibilities.

I have a 99 solara sle 124k but in very good condition.
Im pretty sure im not doing anything to the gear shift. Sometimes, when I start the car and put it into drive, the gear does not engage for a second (free idle), then it engages as the light comes on the dash instrument panel.

and relax , there shocar4.
please

(thanks for the prompt replies though)

sounds right to me. It is just a cable going from the plastic shifter inside the car, to the transmission. It isn't actually engaging that gear, right when you put it into "drive". Your car is probably just fine, I have the same car. 1999 Solara SLE V6 currently at 142k. Runs just fine.

^^ what he said...thank god you don't have a old old mb. When you shifted those into drive, the freaking tranny mounts (when broken) would make the car jump a little..just like your 2 second delay. Its normal...relax, its a toyota

^^ right on, now go introduce yourself in the intro section.

also, if there's a shift hesitation, couldn't he possibly tighten the lower cable on the throttle body? i know that said cord is typically adjusted to alter shift points on the auto (and the speed it engages), but i also remember hearing that adjusting it will affect how quickly your A/T shifts from P to R to D.

just a thought...i drive a 99 SLE w/ ~144k miles on it, and the tranny is still holding strong.
