I'm driving regularly... suddenly, check engine comes on :o I dont notice anything wrong... no noise, no smoke, temperature is normal....

What could it be?! I'm really worried... can i still drive the car?

My car is a manual 99 SE at 190,000 km.. i havent done any maintenance on it since i got it at 180k km.

please give me some advice on what i could do and what could this be.

Thanks

Go to Canadian Tire or any local garage and ask them to check the code by the ODBII port. At least you will have a hint of what it might be by googling it. If you prefer we talk in french just tell me...

Get the code pulled, then go from there. It’s probably a sensor out of whack, or an emissions problem. You can drive it, but you should get that code ASAP. You should follow the proper maintenance schedule.
Let's just pretend I didn't grow up, or you're going to be terribly disappointed.

I was soo happy... maybe i didnt close the gas cap properlly the last time i filled up...

Should i still go to toyota to get the code anyways? (for free)

If it's under warranty, okay, but only use the dealer as an absolutely last option. Too salty.

a friend of mine works there... so i wouldnt have to pay anything. He told me that the code will still be in the computer and that it should be deleted incase something else happens. if not.. the new code wont show up...

so i think im gonna go... i have nothing to loose

Faites vérifier à un mécanicien votre voiture aussitôt que possible avant que ce devienne un problème cher.

Mine came on too, O2 by the fire wall went out. Service manager said "we'll check if it's covered under warenty since it's part of the drive train".
He hasn't called me back and I've called and been there twice waiting.
What's up with this guy.
I almost wanna change it myself.

Any ideas??

Same with me the other night, I thought it was serious as I was cruising on the highway and then it just came on.

P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank #1)

That's what I pulled from Autozone.

The car has less than 70k miles on it so I doubt its a cat, usually an O2. I just reset the code and see if it comes back. If it comes back I'll just bust out the multimeter...if anything take it to the dealer or replace the O2 by
myself.

Try the Anti Fowler mod with that code.

I'll consider that an option, but the thing is, exhaust-wise, it's completely stock. I'm going to make sure everything is working or if something's just loose before I spend any more money (even if it is only a few bucks lol).

Thanks for the tip though Midias.
