02 Sensor Question...

So I've had my Check Engine Light on for awhile, I just took it into Auto Zone to see if they can diagnose the problem.

Turns out the O2 Sensor on the headers is bad and needs to be replaced. A new Sensor from Bosch will set me back $203.00 The guy was a little hesitant and said you may want to check the codes out again at the dealership assuming there maybe more things wrong?!

1. Should I just buy the sensor and replace it myself? Easy install I hope.
2. Take it to the dealership to get a second opinion in addition fork out 60 bucks for them to tell me the samething...
3. O2 sensor what exactly does it do? (measure oxygen temperature from the engine?) haha I have no clue.

is ur car a cali spec car? or no?

the o2 sensor for the noncali spec should be anywhere from 70$ to 150.

The one for the cali spec (like mine) cost about 225 from the dealer, because they are A/F Sensors, not O2, for the cali spec ones.

My Car is non-cali spec. But I just went on the Website of Autozone and it says "The 02 Sensor before the catalytic converter for an automatic tranny is $203.00

Bank 2 you could possibly do yourself, Bank 1 you need a lift. A lot of times they get seized in the exhaust manifold and than the price skyrockets. I charge a diag of 1 hour, but you'd be looking at 1.5 labor plus parts if you came to my dealer (i.e. $150 plus parts) so prob around $400 out the door. The diag would go towards the 1.5 not in addition.

you need to find out what code first, then you can determine which one went bad

depend on which engine you own, 4cyl has two sensor, one right after the exhaust manifold in front(bank1 sensor 1), just right behind the radiator, one after the Cat.

for V6, there are 3 sensors, bank1 sensor 1 is the one on the rear of the engine, right in front of the firewall, one right behind the radiator.
and the last one is after the CAT.

please becareful, doesn't matter if you have a cali spec or not, find out the part number before ordering, the OEM part number should be stamped on the sensor.

there are two type of sensors camry normally uses, Oxygen sensor ($104 oem from online dealer), or Air Fuel Ratio Sensor, for Cali spec, they use A/F sensor, Oxygen sensor and A/F sensor not interchangable.

i bought mine from www.toyotaoemparts.com, they are local toyota dealer in Indiana, over $100 is free shipped, they price normally 25% lower then walk in to part dept in local toyota dealer. they have a phone number you can call if you want to talk to a life person.

my 97 camry 4cyl and 2003 4cyl are not Cali spec, and they use A/F sensor ($155 oem from online dealer). my other non-cali spec camry uses oxygen sensor, go figure.

and would stick with toyota oem parts.

Oh, if you want to change it yourself, you can get a 22mm Oxygen sensor socket, there is a slit on the side, that is design for oxygen sensor removal/installation, maybe around $10 from ebay. i use them a few time, very helpful, and make the job a lot easier. took me 2 or 3 minutes to change the one in front.

you can get an O2 sensor socket from autozone , pepboys ect for about 10 bucks I love mine.
