me thinks its a smog or California thing. I know personally, I would want to run a cat since up here in NorCal the cops usually get on all 4s and take a look up your skirt for a cat. IF all they see is nice shiney metal, Busted big time. I'd rather have a high flow or gutted cat than trouble from Mr. law.

Dat, I believe Sean, #5 on the list is off. He recently totaled his Camry.

ok I decided to make the mid-pipe 12.5 inches long, the same as a 92-94 oem camry catalyic converter. This way you can either purchase a bolt on one, go to local junkyards and find one for cheap or weld your own cat on the mid section. If you think the length will be a problem yet me know.

I know what you mean, man. At a local car meet here last night, people were getting busted for a modified exhaust! That's IT! A MODIFIED EXHAUST!

A guy with a [b]bone-stock[b] Evo with dealer plates still on got pulled over because the cops THOUGHT he had a modded exhaust.

Damn.... now you gonna make me look n see if I got a pre-cat...

Doubt it, and if so, Im getting this thing!

Here in NY they dont really mess with a modded exhaust, unless it is crazy loud... like a civic with a damn soup can for a muffler tip.
Geeks get it done, while Nerds whimper and call for mommie.

If I were to do the headers, it would have to be for performance headers, not just stock to stock.

But for everyone though, I hope my picture will help you in determining what you have.

Extra thought from me: it appears that everyone on the buy list has a gen 1 (except for 2 people). So I'm wondering, is this extra cat a gen 1.5 thing, a So-Cal thing, or a combination of both. Hmmm...

I would haha thats just me though... JP header.... 1500.... Stock noncat header with DatsYpipe...350. Nearly same gains.

Hey Dat, when you say nearly same gains how close are we talking about here? i don't recall seeing any dyno's throughtout the thread but then again i read it a while ago. Also how long did u run it on ur car? i'm interested but i was leaning towards just saving up for jpp headers/y-pipe.

I dont have my dynosheets anymore since the computer crash (Long story). But I got average 7-15whp (one run closer to 17whp but not counting on that) with catback and ram intake with stock boost.. That was before knock sensor blew the second time. JP claimed theirs on low 20 to 35whp... So its a reasonable gain. ANd this was like with 10 runs. So its somewhere in there.

Again this is MY dyno. The guys did my dyno and thats what I saw. My car seemed fine up to the knock issue. Every car varies.

hey ThatVietGuy

thanks for posting that pic of the pre-cat, that makes me feel much more comfortable knowing I dont' have it... here's a pic of mine

Image

and... that pre-cat... It might be a gen 1.5 thing... I got a gen 1, so I don't have it... and i'm in So-Cal, so we're the same on that factor. where you from?, oh wait... UCR... haha, hey man, I never got to tell you, but I think that badge is fu*king sickkkkk. I go to a UC too, but yours is like... type R status,

Dats figures on the y-pipe is VERY accurate. Back when EricSol was still figuring out the JPP headers for our cars he dyno'd his boosted and got the exact same results... ~15whp for a ypipe. Their now discontinued y-pipe with cat solution was made to bolt up to the stock headers. It was the same design as the full header system, but difference was the flanges and pipe length in order to work with stock headers. EricSol gained somewhere from ~10-15whp from his stock boosted 5sp. On a full header, it ranged from ~20-35whp.

All that testing is with a cat. Dat's Y-pipe is Catless, hence the figures being a bit higher

sounds good guys. i may have to jump on this last minute, i'm still debating. also why is it that the jpp headers didn't come wit a straight y-pipe?

also is the y-pipe easy to install by jus jacking up the car? like a catback exhaust? Can everything be reached ok? i know the headers had issues with install.

BTW its not a so cal gen 1.5 thing for the pre-cat because that's what i have and i have no pre-cat.

thanks,
Michael

JPP never came with a straight pipe because of members request. Everyone wanted it to be as high quality and bolt on a possible. BY getting a straight pipe, you have to worry about smog, fines for not having a cat (Cali people get hit HARD) and you will get a check engine light with no cat which means you have to order an O2 simulator to trick the ECU.

JPP made a wise decision in adding a cat as it will pass the sniffer test but may not pass visual since it is not OEM or carb legal.

Dats pipe is made in Texas where they dont know the meaning of smog lol
Having no cat reduces costs as by adding the cat, it will raise prices anywhere from 100+ depending on model, type of cat etc.
