Injen SRI = less mpg?

Injen SRI = less mpg?

Postby Solarizona » Sat Oct 21, 2006 2:50 pm

I installed an Injen SRI about 2 weeks ago and have noticed a significant drop in mpg. I used to get 440 to 450 miles per tank consistently. Since the Injen I'm getting about 390. I don't drive any harder and it's the only upgrade besides suspension and wheels. I've read a lot that a cat-back system will decrease mpg but never heard of an intake doing so. Is this normal? Thanks.

My intake increased my mileage but heavy rims will kill it.

Injen = decrease because you will want to get into the accel more to hear it growl! ;)

I'm averaging around 18-19MPG the last few tanks - mostly city/beach driving. :D

Damn, didn't even think about the wheels. I recently upgraded to 18's. That's probably the cause.

That'd be a pretty big coincident if I needed a tune-up at the exact same time I installed the intake.

you guys remember, the short ram is geared towards mid- to high end power only. I've had that setup before the CAI on both N/A and now S/C and its been discussed before that with the engine running as hot as it is, you are sucking nothing but hot air in stop/go traffic. In city driving, a stock airbox (which is basically like a cold air anyways) is better than the injen. At WOT, the injen just has more flow.

^ Thanks, that makes sense. Starting to think I'm better off with the stock airbox.

But since it's sucking in hot air...isn't that what the Heat Shield is for?

heat shield just shields heat... it doesnt make an air tight connection to draw in cool air. At low speeds, air does not circulate in the engine bay and therefore it sucks in hot air. The only thing the injen short ram is good for is WOT or when you are at freeway speeds. At partial throttle, its actually laggy when compared to the stock air box which is designed to draw cold air from the side of the fender.

^ what he said about city driving

and for those with bigger/heavier rims....mpg will noticeable go down during city driving

for highway driving, mpg will stay the same or even be better

remember physics: objects in motion tend to stay in motion, and heavier rims roll same or better when already moving
