bigger than 2.75" will throw a check engine light at you
i know my reply is months late
also, 2.75" mandrel bent aluminized steel piping can be bought from jcwhitney.com, it's in the exhaust tubing section.
using a 3" pipe (or larger) will throw a CEL like i said, but it'll still be drivable...the difference will be that the A/F ratio will run a little bit rich (stuck in a warm-up loop) to prevent knocking (IIRC). this CEL supposedly can be fixed with a a/f re-tune (proof of concept found with the CP-E intake which is 3.5" and comes with a remapped a/f modulator, which prevents you from throwing the CEL)
also, if you want to make a cold air extension, you're gonna need to use 2.75" piping, as the 3" piping will not fit through the fender (without hammering out the engine bay), and 3" will also not be able to make the ~90 degree turn into the fender well (which you need to do in order to get the air filter to fit).
oh yeah, and the throttle body is sized to fit a 2.75" coupler....if you use 3" piping + a 3" coupler, then you're gonna have to figure a way out to get an airtight fit of the intake (in my case, with my 3" intake, i had to use two layers of rubber around the TB side of the coupler, in order to make it flush out to 3")
has anyone weighed in regarding keeping the stock fender tubing in place, in order to direct fresh cool air from the fender? i'm talking about the piece that can only be removed by pulling back the splash guard.
