OBX Headers Feedback

Postby x99suplarax » Tue May 19, 2009 2:29 pm

We'll I have a friend that knew 5 ppl that works at the shop.. And the person who worked on my car gave me an estimate 3hrs and its 86/hr.. Equal to $258.. And was like damn I really wanna do this.. If you can do it for 200 then I'm down(he said yes cuz its was a slow day, needed something to keep him busy) but then it ended up taking a couple extra hrs.. But he said it was a hassle cuz had to lift the engine lol a long wait to play with new mod;)

I will attempt to put on the OBX headers this weekend. If I succeed I'll let everyone know. Does anyone here know if there's any problem to running the headers alone without a cat. converter or O2 simulator? I know the CEL will come on but does the engine timing gets messed up or the fuel economy goes way down? I'm asking because I went to a muffler shop to ask them to weld on a cat for me but they said the y-pipe had to be installed on the car first. Otherwise they can't align the flange to bolt up correctly. So that means I'll have to drive without a cat until I can go back to the muffler shop.

The guy that is going to install my OBX headers told me that he has to remove the axle.

I removed my axle to install the rear headers. It would have been difficult to install them without removing the axle. I welded a Random Technology (Race Style Cat) on the y-pipe.

I only had my camera phone with me. I'll post a better pics tomorrow.

HAHAHA! SUCCESS!!! I actually managed to install the headers without removing the axle or lifting the engine. It took me the entire weekend but it is doable. I will make a tutorial in the coming weekend to let everyone know how I did it.

OKay, so here's my feedback on the OBX headers after almost a week of using it. ITS FREAKING LOUD!!! haha. Seriously, I thought some peeps on this forum said their exhaust got quieter with the headers but mine is just the exact opposite. On start up the car rumbles loudly and even when i'm cruising around the parking lot there's a droning sound. Don't get me wrong it's a very nice deep, throaty sound but it's probably 3x louder than before. I feel like a cop magnet now. I hope when I get the Magnaflow cat. converter installed it will be a little quieter.

Performance wise, I love it! There is a lot more top end power and it's a perfect compliment to my TRD supercharger. The car just takes off so much faster and breathes much more efficiently. However, there's significantly more heat coming from the headers so the engine bay temp seems higher. The temperature gauge needle stayed at about the same level so I guess that's not a big concern.

im not sure what kind of intake you have but if your running an SRI you might want to think about wrapping those headers or doing the CAI extention.Id love to here the growel of that thing any way you can make a vid?

Yea, I'm using the Injen SRI right now so the increase engine heat is a concern. The CAI extension might be a future upgrade but I don't think I will wrap my headers since I heard from guys at the local car shows that header wraps retains the heat and cause premature cracks. In terms of sound, the headers got noticeably quieter today. I don't know if it finished going through a "break-in" period or not but there's no longer a deep droning sound when I roll around the parking lot. However, it still sounds amazing whenever I step on the gas pedal.

Update: I have driven the car with the new headers for a week now without the check engine light turning on. Today it actually came on. I am curious as to why it takes a week for it to do so.

Also, the header installation tutorial have been added to "tutorial" section of the forum.
