So I guess if you wanted to get really fancy about it you could step back on the brakes after your front tire goes over the bump to shift the weight forward again before your back tire goes over it!

back on topic - i don't think the abs in my 98 camry is over-sensitive. and i have autocrossed it a few times. the ABS only engages when i expect it to - usually because i entered a turn too fast and as a result was on the brakes too hard, too late.

the only time i can tell i have tire slip is when i'm starting to pull away from a stop and i feel the front tires slip on a painted crosswalk or just polished asphalt.

driving style has a lot to do with it, so this is a rather subjective thing. i haven't owned very many cars, but of the ones we've had that had ABS, the 2002 isuzu rodeo had some VERY touchy ABS. it came on even if only one wheel was skidding, and even then it was overly aggressive about it. making even a moderately quick stop on wet asphalt meant that the abs would kick in every time. that combined with lousy gas mileage (yes, it's an SUV but my dad's v8 sequoia got the same gas mileage as this v6 rodeo!) the constant mechanical issues (blown head gaskets, failing transmission electronics, constant fluid leaks everywhere... thank god we had an extended warranty on that thing!) we decided to sell it.

Keep in mind the engineers responsible for dialing in the suspension/ road manners of the car when it's designed also calibrate the abs. They choose a setting that best compliments the STOCK wheel/ tire package(s) when used with STOCK struts and springs. For some of our more mod-happy Solaraguys with lowered suspension and low-profile tires, this COULD conceivably cause minor issues.

as i said, it's a very subjective thing. personal taste. even when this 98 camry had 18x8 wheels and 235/40 tires on ground controls and tokicos, i still don't think the ABS was too sensitive. now that i'm back on stock suspension (and was even on stock 205/65/15 tires for a year), my opinion hasn't changed. but i can't state enough that it's just that - an OPINION.

allows the drop to be less tramatic to both the car and
driver. To do this effectively, however, the hole must
be anticipated and sudden braking avoided as much as
possible.

Great advice, Jimmm.

All you have to do let off the brakes for the half-second it takes to traverse the bump/ hole. Then, continue to brake normally. This 'unloads' the front suspension and returns the nose of the car to it's normal ride height. This way there is more suspension travel available to 'smooth out' the bump. Also, the weight of the car is shifted forward when you hit the brakes. This puts more demand on your springs/ struts as they slam across imperfections in the road.

More on topic-- no issues with my Gen2 abs being over sensitive.
