Introduction:
So, here begins my transformation from n/a stock (almost) 2000 Camry v6. I have a lot of mods planned for my car, and I'm going to get a dyno every step of the way. It seems to me there is always some confusion over exactly what modifications gives you what gains. I plan on helping to clear that up once and for all. I'll post all the results here, so everyone can see what gains I get after each individual modification. It should be interesting to see how the numbers change as I go.

I plan to dyno each of the following individually.

Mods to Come (tentative order):
Dyno 1: Base Run (complete)
Dyno 2: OBX Headers & Y-pipe w/ JPP Cat-back, & Jim's Fuel Mod
Dyno 3: MAF cleaning
Dyno 4: High-flow Magnaflow Catalytic Converter
Dyno 5: TRD S/C (4 psi pulley)
Dyno 6: Apexi SAFC 2 w/ tune
Dyno 7: Port & Polished Throttle Body
Dyno 8: TB Spacer
Dyno 10: excessive TRD badges (just kidding)

--------
FIRST (BASE) RUN: March 5th, 2010
Set up: N/A Camry v6
Miles: 157,000
Modifications: Injen SRI (short ram intake) w/ K&N cone filter

Image
Image

Reaction: Terrible!! Running very rich. As you can see, for the first three runs, each run was leaner than the previous run resulting in dramatic increases in performance. What could it be? O2 Sensors need replacing? Dirty MAF? stock MAF too small for my intake? Spark plugs? Hmm...

Notes: I'll be replacing my spark plugs (with NGK) when I install my S/C, and after which I'll be using an SAFC II to tune the AFR. I would like to change my O2 sensors as well, but the dealership prices were too high and I haven't looked into how much they cost elsewhere.
--------

--------
SECOND RUN: (Coming Soon)
Next to be Dyno'ed: OBX Shorty Headers, OBX Y-Pipe, and JPP Cat-back
Taking a visit to Gabe tomorrow to pick up the cat-back and get the crap installed. Next week I'll be getting a dyno to see the impact.

Nice! Now we can see the incremental gains with each mod! When you finally finish, I see a new sticky.

Yeeah man. And people should donate money to my PayPal account to cover the dyno runs... Just throwin that out there lol.

Actually the place I go has a pretty good deal. $75 for 3 runs. $150 for a tune. Nice shop and very cool staff. The guy who owns it apparently drives a 4runner with a 1MZ-FE in it if I understood him correctly. So good for me, he should feel right at home with my engine.

Hmmm... Interesting for sure. Your car is running pretty badly for a stock baseline. Some pretty bad numbers actually- but as you said, could be a number of reasons why, but the afr makes it pretty obvious.

And 75 for 3 runs isn't great, but 150 for a tune is pretty decent for sure!

Ouch! :o

I got 153 on my dyno run last spring, and that was with a home made restrictor in my ebay intake. No other mods. Also made over 171lb/ft of torque.
Trust me, I'm a technician.

I think the reason they charge $75 is because it's a hub-centric (i think thats the term) dyno, where they attach the machine to the hub. I guess that takes more work than the more common roller set up? Having to remove the wheels and all. *shrug*

Yeah I really don't know why I'm running so rich. I think this issue with running rich is a relatively new occurrence. A couple weeks ago randomly one day I was getting a VERY strong gaseous smell in the cabin blowing in from the engine bay. It was incredibly noxious. I left the car idling for about 10 minutes with the a/c on and when I opened up the door it was like sticking my nose into a gas tank.

The smell never returned after that day. I SeaFoam'ed later that day and found a really bad front manifold leak (which I posted a video of here on SG)... but the smell hasn't returned, certainly not anywhere near that bad.

Maybe a spark plug isn't firing... but the engine feels fine. I'll be replacing my sparks in a couple weeks when I put the S/C on. The exhaust Gabe is helping me put on this weekend may balance it out some.

We shall see...

Yeah I was dissapointed to see those numbers, and surprised too. I'm going to dyno the new exhaust, and then I'm going to clean my MAF, and dyno again. Hopefully that's all it will take.

lol...forgot about that bad front manifold leak...you basically just found the reason for your rich afr

the leak looked pretty bad in the video, and long story short, you are losing enough exhaust through that leak to make your o2 sensor think that you are running lean- hence, the ecu will then add fuel (at least to your rear- radiator side- bank). A leak of that proportion will affect both your short and long term fuel trims, and can even result in a change in the preset open-loop settings.

as for the $75 for a dynapack- yeah, it's a lot more work, so that sounds much more reasonable.

So you gained nearly 14 HP and 20 ft/lb TQ out of just an intake? WOW!!!! I mean like mentioned...the stock motor should be pushin a lil more itself...but that type of gain looks great! I think it's awesome you will be dynoing EACH mod! PROPS! never seen that done before!

huh... good thinking! Well I'm getting my headers on tomorrow so if that's the source of the problem then that should fix it. And if that is the case not only will I be seeing a gain from the headers, but also a gain from the leak being fixed.

My MPG during the 8 hour trip up to Maine today was riding right at 30 MPG. We'll see how that changes tomorrow evening when I ride down after my OBX and JP exhaust is on!

I'm not really sure what I gained from the intake because I haven't dyno'ed that separately. The dyno results I posted was with the intake already on. I can tell you though that I gained about 2 MPG highway. My ScanGauge was reading 27-28 MPG highway before, after was 30-31 MPG on the same road.

Got the OBX Headers & Y-Pipe + JPP Cat-back installed! Along with Jim's Fuel Mod. DAMN that crap is LOUD!! It sounds amazing, very deep deep tone but it's a little too loud. It sounds like a beast. Hopefully getting a cat in will help that some. I'll post a video up on youtube eventually.

I'm going to schedule a time to go to the dyno again soon.

the shop is Agile Automotive, L.L.C.

I haven't heard of JE Motorsports. I'll have to check them out.

damn, your 1MZ got some issues cuz it definitely should be making more power than my 3VZ...or at least horsepower

my last dyno, while i still had an exhaust leak, i was running at

163.7 whp
168.5 ftlb

and i was using the same hub dyno as well.

they do say though, hub dyno will turn out lower numbers but it's always more consistent and accurate
