2002 2.4l 4cyl LOW IDLE .... Please help me!

I know, I know, the general rule of thumb is to clean the Mass Air Flow Sensor, and clean out the trottle intake... Done, did that! Even replaced the air filter!

I've hooked up my car to a ODB-II reader, the car idles at 650-ish RPM, somtimes it will go as low as 600RPM, when I kick in the A/C it jumps to 780RPM, but then settles back down to 650-ish RPM. When the car is in drive it stays pretty solid at 600RPM.

I want my car to idle at 800-ish to 1000-ish RPM, that seems to be the smoothest idle speed.

How can I program my ECU to tell my blinking car to blinking stay at that blinking RPM range?

Or, what else could be the problem, and how can I fix it? The last thing I want to do is go to a Toyota dealer, I'm affraid of getting charged out the A$$, and I don't trust service station technicians with my car...

Dunno man...I guess our cars like to idle that low. Its not as bad as when you disconnect battery and reset ECU (sits lower for a bit).

I too had cleaned everything, TB, sensor, air filter, manifold (SeaFoamed previously), injectors, tank and new spark plugs...and my 2005 2.4L still likes to idle low.

I think 800rpm would be wonderful since its so quiet and vibrations lower a bit, but I guess the stock ECU will always do that.

Somebody, PROVE us WRONG!

 Yeah, like I said, I did that. After doing a lot of searching here on these forums I came to that conclusion.

But after having done that, it's still right where it's ALWAYS been.

Actually It's like the whole procedure was a waste of my time! The car, since i've had it (I got it in 2007 w/ 32K on it) has idled there. I've seen ZERO improvemnet.

What else could be wrong with my car? Do I need a new MAF sensor? A Throttle Assembly? A new ECU?

I guess that sums it up...don't think the cost of a piggyback would we worth idling change (if it could).

What's a piggyback?

Like a piggyback or standalone ECU...another computer to control engine functions.

How much would one of those set one back?

If it's less than $500 I would buy it to fix my problem.

Don't the Scion TCs use this engine? do they idle low too? Could i use an ECU from one of those cars?

I'm assuming that the ECU/piggyback computer gnegroni is referring to is something like an Apexi S-AFCII or the like....

it shouldn't cost more than 3 bills, but then you'd have to fine someone reputable to tune it (which may cost 50-100 bucks)

check the idler adjustment screw near the throttle--you can adjust the idle from there, i think.

Yeah, the '02 and newer solara have "drive-by-wire" on the 4cyl engines, it's all computer controlled... no manual adujstment anywhere!

How many miles are on your cars/engines?

I'm at 108,000 and I'm idling fine @800.
