ToysRme post #25, anyone have any thoughts on this? Especially regarding "The 1mz-fe's that *have* blown up, were killed by:
1) The G D TRD supercharger, which is too small for a Miata, let alone an engine 50% larger with atleast the same volumetric effeciancy. It is too small, the flow is too hot, and the fueling is not up to par.
2) Poor tuning."

-Mike

okay back on subject.....

IIRC the TRD sc is an M62 (someone correct me if I'm wrong) To put things in perspective, the M62 came stock on the Ion Redline/Cobalt SS and was an upgrade for the Miata Jackson Racing sc. I think the supercharged 3.8L t-birds came with an M90. With any form of forced induction, compressing the air = heat. Heat kills engines. With the limited space in the engine bay, and intercooler isn't pratical with a TRD sc. It's been done before...but it's a tight fit. Methanol injection works wonders! Like turbochargers, a bigger, more efficient, supercharger will move more air and produce less heat at a lower pressure ratio.

Tuning....proper tuning is a must. No way around it. A crappy tune with F/I on top of a high compression engine is just asking for it to blow up

sorry

Postby NRDriver » Sun Aug 23, 2009 10:40 am

sorry :drinking:
it does seem like i have heard both from trd4life and Eye8Pussies that higher boost with the trd s/c does have heat issues.

my second question is ... are these superchargers made for large amounts of boost? it does seem that your putting alot of strain on the engine and supercharger with smaller pullies

anyways. more strain=more heat. am i wrong?

the redline and ss run at 12 psi...but they're intercooled. I think it might be a a better m62 than the trd unit. Just like the m90 trd4life is working on is much better than the previous m90's. I think he said it's something like 50% more efficient :o

Lets say you have an M90 and an M62 unit running the same PSI on a 1MZ...

... The engine with the M90 will run cooler than the M62 engine as the M90 will not have to spin as fast to generate the same PSI as the M62.

The S/C will run cooler, not necessarily the engine.(?)

lol sorry for the hijack....but yes...in the end, it's being careful with the parts and tuning carefully for everbody's setup

NRDriver - I look forward to your updates when you get all your parts together and start your build! it's always to see more projects out there

True, but I was only referring to the air temps.

Well, assuming nothing else is wrong with the car, the air entering the intake manifold won't be as superheated with the M90 as it would with the M62.

i think that trying to push 10lbs of boost into our car using the m62 isnt only going to make the charger hotter because it has to work harder. it will also put more strain on the engine in the fact that its driven off of the crank pulley.
Not good for motor

since the m90 is larger it wont put as much strain on the engine because it maid for higher flow. in return our motor doesnt have to work as hard at the same time.

more boost with less strain and friction on all the parts
