I have this problem that is really bugging me. When I'm crusing at about 40mph and let off the gas, my tach drops rapidly and then rises back up. I've done some internet searches and can't seem to find a good answer to what this might be. Does anyone here have any ideas? Thanks

Not sure what gen solara you have, but my gen 1.5 auto does the same thing, it would be right aroud +/- 1800 then drop to like a 1000-1100 and then back up to 1500-1600 rpms, but as far as i remember it's always done that, doesn't cause any driveability issues such as jerking etc.

I have a 2001 SLE and although it doesn't cause much of a problem, it really makes the everything feel less "smooth" when driving. It's definitely not something a new car would do, so I kinda want to figure this out without having the dealer charge me an arm and a leg just to look at it.

maybe its downshifting automatically for u?
the g35 does that also but the gear change isn't felt so strongly
there isn't too much of a jerking feel but its still there

^^ no, it's not that, at least, not what is happening to mine....

for me, it's similar, i'll be cruising, then i'll let off the gas and it's almost like i hear my car *sigh* (prob b/c of the intake and throttle body). the RPMs will drop about 300-400 for a second, then they'll rebound to where they should be for coasting.

i had my tranny replaced recently. it did this before and after the "new" tranny (67k miles) was installed on it (so it's not a tranny mechanical problem). the tranny mechanic said that the TPS was doing something strange: that the voltage would drop suddenly (like, from 1.5 to 1.1 or something) when your foot was removed from the gas, whereas everytime else the voltage would increase/decrease gradually.

it doesn't affect drivability, but because it doesn't do it all the time, it kinda bugs me too.

Exactly Chinky. It bugs the crap out of me too. Sometimes it can be hard to maintain a speed b/c when you let off the gas just slightly, the RPM's will dive down and jump back up...very annoying. I'm convinced it's something to do with the throttle, but I dont know where to start here.
