Vague. Can you repeat that? Thanks!

He needs a donor + $500 to experiment? Or does he need a donor, have him experiement with it first. And if product is good, donor pays 500 for it?

He's going to need $500 + your headlights.

Aside: Nice car haha.

$500 + headlights for halogen projectors???????? You gotta be kidding right? A TSX, S2000, etc. D2S retrofit outputs better lighting and isn't that much more expensive. I should know because I did it to my car. What exactly makes this project so expensive? Design costs nothing, just time & effort. Manufacturing shouldn't be that high for an "experiment." I'm rarely negative but I highly doubt he's going to even get 10 people to give him their headlights + $500, or anything close to that. Not to mention there are people who want chrome, others want black, and then theres the Gen 1/1.5 difference.

No not halogen projectors, HID projectors.
To be honest even the original asking price ($1500) is a bit over the top considering we were only asking for a simple retro. I'm not knocking their work quality or anything but I've seen retro's being done for nearly half that price WITH good quality.

When it comes to something like this there's just too many factors involved because people have different tastes and want different mods done. He was not able to give a clear definite answer on price and as a result I can't relay anything back either. The only thing I was made aware of was that the retros get cheaper as more are being completed. No solid numbers so I'll leave it up to you to interpret that any way you'd like; maybe you'd save $1 or maybe you'd save $1000. I don't know.

Most of the conversations we've had were pretty much me asking for solid answers and him giving me vague ones. I guess it's a way to cover themselves, I don't know. It's very tough to work with the guy because he's speaking from a theoretical standpoint when I'm speaking from a realistic one. Somewhat like an engineer to mechanic conversation; you know it can be done and know which corners can be cut, but the engineer really wants to cover ALL his bases.

gasolara2002: That sounds like something seperate, you'd have to ask him about that for pricing. I personally believe you can do this kind of project yourself, just going to need a steady hand and some time.

be careful, this is also a redflag in my book for potentially shady dealings.

and i say this, while understanding the need for some leeway in naming specifics. either way, for the amount of money we're talking about, and the number of finished products, he should have a much more solid idea of what he's gotta do, or what he CAN do for us, as a whole (disregarding all the custom requests).

because even if it's coming out to $400 for 40 people, that is still 16k, and $500 for 40 people is $20,000. which admittedly isn't a whole lot for a aftermarket company, but the difference between making 40 units for future sale and our group buy, is that once completed, all 40 units are going to be sold straight out (or at least 35 pairs will, there may be 5 people who have something going on...but either way, 35x500 is $17,500). it's not like they're manufacturing headlights that may or may not sit on the shelves after they're made.

personally, i'd say look into other manufacturers still....remember, this guy may still be trying to negotiate you, so try throwing some counter offers still. for me, 500+set of headlights is a bit steep (i'd do 400+headlights, or 500 straight up, but not both 500 AND headlights).

if you talk to other companies about it, remember, these are 40 sales, not 40 units that would be potentially available to the public. they are already spoken for. especially if you can get it done at 400 + shipping. i'm pretty sure almost everyone on the list would be down for 400 dollars, and you may even pick up some more buyers (bumping it up to 50 people), if you get the price locked in at 400.

just my two cents. i'm not on the list proper (i was waiting in the wings to see a price, and 500+headlights isn't sexy enough for me). if there were a deal for 400 + shipping, then i'd be down. but otherwise i'll pass.

hopefully ya'll can still get this to work out though. i'd hate to see 30+ people drop off the list because some company is price-gouging.

Seriously man, I've been looking at other companies also but at the same time it's starting to dawn on me that I can save a lot more by doing things myself. Most of these retrofitters are looking at doing CCFL angel eyes and LED mods. As much as I love my car, it's definitely not CCFL or LED worthy. Or rather not meant for CCFL or LED styling (maybe Richard's is haha).

In the end though, what do we REALLY want as a product? A set of halogen cheapo projectors that are just for show? Or a REAL set of projectors that serve a function? That's when it hit me; I'm going to crack open those headlights.

SolaraGuys, this might be interesting to you out there wanting projectors:

http://depoautolights.com/toyota-camry-sxv10-9294-clear-projector-headlightscorners-p-1502.html?osCsid=363b3684d4ff4e2dd2e666414d426790

(Sorry Bird, not claiming I found this, you did.) Fellow SG/TN'er bigbirdSCed found these guys selling projectors for Gen3 Camrys, and it loks like they just do the work themselves on DEPO clears. Since DEPO makes clear/replacements for our cars, could this not be an avenue for you all to explore? Just a thought...
