i did installed charcoal canister on a 99v6, i did not use any diy book, all i did was jack up the rear with two jack stands, use a 14mm 1/2" socket with a swing head adaptor, disconnect all hoses and wires, and there was enough from to slide the whole charcoal canister from the passenger side rear.

Rewmomi, I will scan the pages for you at work tomorrow. I can't believe you can only find the book for $50 bucks. I bought it at autozone for $20.

Seems easy enough but when i took it to my mechanic he told me i needed to take the cross member out and jack it and replace the unit there after? but thanx i just need to buy some stands i heard theyy got a sale at autozone fro them lol

There may be enough room to wiggle in and out without taking the cross member off. Check your email.

mine was a solara 99 V6, as soon as you put the car on jack, the rear control arm drops a bit along with the wheels, giving enough room to slide the charcoal canister out from the passenger side rear, it is held by 2 of 14mm bolt, use 1/2" socket with swing head adaptor and a 8" or 12" extension, some sort of eye shields, label where each hoses and wire goes for re-installation, i am telling u because i did it myself that way for P0441 and P0446 error without touching the any rear control arm. took me a little over an hour, and i had a back pain next day. but i no longer have the CEL.

my guess is if the shop were to do it, the put it on lift, and once they remove the control arms, they will have plenty of room, but i rather not touch those control arm myself, i believe they are also for alignment, if you take them off, probably need to check alignment awell, another $60 at least .

^^There isn't a control arm on the rear. There are tie rods in the rear which I think your referring too. You can probably just drop the rear cross member which the exhaust and those tie rods may interfere with the complete removal, but with it loose you may be able to maneuver it in such a way that allows enough room for you to slide the charcoal canister out.

i dont' know much about the tie rod, and the only tie rod i know about is the one in front wheel for steering.

i bought one of those rod, toyota named them lower control arm no.2 for around $100 each, due to bad bushing. and that one is for alignment purpose.

here is a link, they also called them control arm

oh, and i forgot to mention, my oem muffler and exhaust pipe is not really on the way when i removed and reinstalled the charcoal canister.

Thats weird. I must have missed it. I looked under the car and I just see two rods connecting to the rear hub.

The "charcoal canister" is the "filter" for emission gasses from the fuel system. It filters the air so no harmful gasses exit the vehicle. So in short no, you are changing the filter.

well, to any of you that said changing it was easy... a big F*U!!! LOL man, talk about Pain in the @$$!!! i mean, technically it ain't hard, but just getting my fat @$$ under the car and trying to disconnect the hoses and wires is not as simple as it sounds!! Anyway, I got it done and hopefully the freaking check engine light wont come on anymore.

that1mexguy...your car looks nice. You have Tokico struts, right? I have Tokico's on my car and mine sits pretty high but still lower than stock. Do you have the blue ones? I do.
