Battery terminal cable replacement

Battery terminal cable replacement

Postby Jakecallun20 » Fri Feb 22, 2008 11:38 pm

How in the world are these things replaced in Solaras? I've looked around there and my positive has 3 cables running to two connectors. One really big one (4AWG I think) and two smaller ones that run to one connector (7AWG I would guess) and one of the smaller ones broke a few months ago, so I fixed it with some extra wire and tape to hold till I got new cables. It seemed to hold well so I left it alone for a while. Well I don't know if it was my subs vibrations or the road rattle, but this has come lose and I just figured that out today. I used a new piece of wire, got new battery terminal cables from autozone and I want to install them if the piece I made doesn't hold up. The negative has 2 wires, one that looks like it runs on top of the tranny and the other mounts under the battery for a ground. Positive... the big one runs to the starter and the 2 smaller ones run under battery and to the right of the battery they go underneath that fuse box. Now the new cables are just one single cable each. And they both have this little (10AWG maybe) cable with a butt splice on it, each cable has that coming off the terminal connector. WTF do I do! I need to get my car fixed. It was going haywire today! All the lights on my cluster went on and my stereo kept turning on and off and then my car (auto) stalled! So it seems fine now, but I want it resolved. I have searched for like 20 minutes for a Tut, and can't find one. So any help at all is very appreciated.

Thanks Jake (Sorry for the long post)

just take the battery out and trace the wires. its really easy to change outthe terminals. I just did it last week. haha. Becareful though, new OEM ones cost me ~30 total. I changed out the stock wires for fatter 4awg ones I had left over from doing audio stuff. Clean everything with water/baking soda and use di-electric grease. Runs like a champ now. I think my audio even gets more juice :)

For the negative post there should be 2 wires that run from the tranny and then one that goes under the battery.
For the positive post there is 3 wires, 1 goes to the starter, and the other 2 go to the fust box.

I redid mine positive and negative post clamps wit RockFord Fosgate.

My negative post has 0 AWG wire that goes to the tranny, and then a 4 AWG wire that goes under the battery.
My positive post has a 4 AWG wire that goes to the starter, and then the 2 little wire [black and white, i think] that goes to the fuse box i just took off alittle more of the cover and twisted them really good, and then placed then on the RockFord Fosgate positive clamp.

Alright. I've got cables ready to go on the car this weekend. I have a question though, how does the positive cable connect to the starter? Is it just an eye at the end of a cable and run a bolt thru it? That is the type of connector on the new cable.

Thanks

Yeah, there is a rubber boot that covers it.
And it's a pain to take off, IMO.

Cool, Thanks. I felt the rubber boot just wasn't sure what was under it. 8) I will have the air box out aswell as the battery while I'm cleanin some stuff out and replacing those. Also are the bolts that hold the grounds on, are they a certain type of bolt that has to be unscrewed in a certain way?

When I tried to unscrew the one under the battery it seemed like it was just turning and not coming out. (Yes I was turning it the right way)

Thanks. Appreciate it.

yeah its been a long time since i've had to do any of this. but I cant have my car going haywire so yeah. I've got a new ground wire set, one for the trans and one for the battery tray. Also got a gold plated piece that fits over battery lobe and has 2x 4AWG and 2x 8AWG ports. the 2 four gauge ports are for the starter cable and for my amp's power. the 2 eight gauge ports are for the two wires running to the fuse box.
