Brake Light on

Brake Light on

Postby Orefus » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:09 pm

My hand break light keeps coming on and off. My battery terminals were loose before, and I tightened them, and when I did, it seemed like that reduced the amount of times the light came on. What do you guys think the problem with my car is?

remove the rear of the center console(the armrest portion).
you will see a little pink colored switch......either it's loose and not always making contact with the brake handle, maybe the connector for the switch is loose, or perhaps it's shorting out,.....you wont know until you have a "look-see"
you could go to your local "pull-a-part" or the stealership for another one....Im sure it's not that expensive either way :)

When's the last time you had your brakes replaced? Could be that you're pads/rotors are worn out and you're low on brake fluid.

Top off the fluid, it'll remedy the light but it won't remedy the fact that you might be driving with bad brakes.

He said his "hand brake" light kept coming on, I dont think that has anything to do with what your talking about...........

this has been discussed sooooooooo many times before. (K) is actually right. when WAS the last time you replaced your brakes? just give it a shot...open your hood, look for the brake fluid and just add some. magically, the little light will dissapear. it just means that you will need to change your breaks soon or already do. easy as that.

IVANHOE, dont be so quick to dismiss other peoples ideas. you never know when they could be right.

OREFUS, just add the brake fluid (top it off) and you will the that the light will not come on again untill your pads get smaller and it needs for you to add more fluid. all in all, your gonna have to change your brakes soon.
almost there...what do you think?

there is no difference between the BRAKE light and the hand BRAKE light, they are one in the same.

Happened to me, my car was on an incline and i was a little low, topped off with a few ml ounces and worked...

I've had similar issues with many other cars and I've always thought it was faulty electrical issues also, but after topping off fluids and checking for leaks, the light turns off. More often than not that light indicates that you have low brake fluid DUE to worn out or leaking brake components. That is, assuming you put your e-brake down fully and you don't feel a drag when you're driving...

((BRAKE!))

If THAT light is coming on, I suggest you simply top off your brake fluid before you start tearing up your interior to get to a few connections. If that doesn't work, then by all means, continue diagnosing.

or you could do like i did, and just procrastinate until the light turns itself off :-)

here's my recommended list of diagnosis/treatment options, in order of amount of effort placed forth.

1) ignore it
2) top off the brake fluid
3) tear apart the inside looking for the connector.

i had it happen to me, but it turned out that i just needed new front brakes. when i changed the brakes, the light stayed on for about two weeks before correcting itself.

FYI....I said , "I think", that means Im NOT 100%.....
And as for the other poster who made it seem so complex  , it takes approximately 2 minutes to pull the armrest portion of the center console off!

OMFG!!!!! what could be easier than just topping off your brake fluid??? i mean seriously. before you take the center console apart and start fidgeting around in there, i suggest to just top it off. if it doesnt turn off (the brake light i mean) then go ahead and go into your center console and check the brake in there. but seriously, eventhough you have to pull it apart, just pls, pls top off your brake fluid. but if your dead set on just taking off your center console, be my guest....

Lol Raf.
Yeah man, just top off brake fluid then go from there, why do harder things first? Do the easier ones first, you really never know. Just try it.
AND RAF, when we gonna install the shiny stuff under your hood :D

He mentioned that he has to remove it anways to gain access to the "keyless box" ........

(k):
If you ONLY have the brake light issue, then I would suggest topping off the fluid like the other posters mentioned....but since you need to gain access to the "keyless box"...........

I have the VIP RS3000 factory alarm and my alarm computer (keyless box) is located under the armrest:

it might be the fluid. mine was going on/off all the time and all it needed was more brake fluid in the resevoir.

i understand what your saying IVANHOE, I do realize that he has to gain access to the keyless box. What im saying though, is that before he starts doing anything in there, he should just top off the brake fluid. what if he starts messing around w/ some wires and makes it worse (not saying that it will happen)?

I really dont understand why im getting so bent out of shape over this. I've given my advice, its up to the person to use it. "You can lead a horse to water, but your cant make him drink"

if you feel like you need to take the center console apart first, then pls be my guest and do so. if it turns out that it WAS the problem, then i apologize, if it turns out to be what I and everyone else stated, then im glad you found a solution. other then that, I'm done.
