You don't mention what model Solara you have. The alarm system is (apparently) only standard on the SLE. Checking Toyota's website (
http://www.toyota.com/camrysolara/models.html look under the 'safety' tab) it doesn't appear the factory anti theft system is even offered as an option on the SE or Sport Coupe versions though that might only be for the current year. It's possible (even probable) your dealer offered an alarm system when you purchased the car. If you accepted then you should have received separate alarm system information from the dealer.
If you have an SLE there should be an LED on the dash that shows when the system is activated. Be sure the system is functioning by locking your doors. The red light should go solid and then start blinking to indicate the alarm is set after 30 seconds.
Again, if you have the SLE you can test the alarm. Leave a window open. Set the alarm and when the light begins blinking reach in and open the door from inside. That should set off the horn and alarm horn (the one that beeps when you activate/deactivate the alarm).
There's a whole bunch more information about the Solara alarm in the factory service manual including a bunch of tricks for setting different modes. If you don't have the manual the information is available from the Gadget Solara site (address below). Just open the 'alarm info' which is the last item in the "Tips" section.
