Don't know if it is better, but they cost $111 for each at Tire Rack. Something I wish I didn't have, too much for replacement. I don't mind checking my tires. Dealer stated they see some that need to be replaced because tire dealers are not careful. Also if you want to have winter rims with snows, no big deal, but you are going to look at the light all winter.

from what I understand, the Gen2 monitor uses the ABS sensors. When your tire is flat, its radius is decreasd and must spin faster to keep up with the rest of the car. If the system notices there is a tire that is constantly faster than others: it sets the light off.
This is a comparative system, so if ALL of your tires are flat, it will not notice. I also hear that it wont go off untill your tire is down to ~15 psi, which is supa-flat.
I assume by "direct monitoring" that there is some sort of a transducer in the wheel that beams info to the cars computer.

fascinating! although that kind of suck. it just makes our tire monitor almost useless if it only detect at ~15psi. i am pretty sure we'll notice the ride quality being rougher before the monitor can detect it.

Don't count on it. Earlier this year I hit a pothole that sliced my tire. My pressure light came on and when I checked it, the tire was at less than 10 PSI and I did not feel anything odd while driving.
Moved on to better things...

Something everyone will have to deal with soon, at least on new cars. Tire pressure monitoring systems are a requirement for all cars manufactured after 2008, I think. I could be wrong on the year, but it's coming soon.

I hear that about model year 2008 cars, too. The direct monitoring type. I don't know about Canada, but 2008 for the US.
