from what I understand, the Gen2 monitor uses the ABS sensors. When your tire is flat, its radius is decreasd and must spin faster to keep up with the rest of the car. If the system notices there is a tire that is constantly faster than others: it sets the light off.
This is a comparative system, so if ALL of your tires are flat, it will not notice. I also hear that it wont go off untill your tire is down to ~15 psi, which is supa-flat.
I assume by "direct monitoring" that there is some sort of a transducer in the wheel that beams info to the cars computer.
