A question regarding caliper painting

A question regarding caliper painting

Postby Jack Soulfire » Thu Oct 05, 2006 7:20 pm

I know caliper painting has been discussed already, but I have a question that I believe hasn't really been discussed in detail and I want to make sure I do this correctly.

I bought jack stands and necessary equipment and materials, but I'm wondering if I need to remove the calipers when painting, or can I just tape over what needs to be taped and paint with the calipers attached?

Excuse my ignorance on the subject, I've just never painted a set before, and I don't know much about the calipers and how they are removed and reattached. I don't want to do anything stupid when I do it this weekend. If I should remove them, is this difficult? Also, if it's easy to describe would anyone mind explaining how.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jack

jack,

i got mine caliper paint kit from walmart. and it had everything i need the paint, tape, caliper cleaner and a paint brush. remove the wheels, tape off the part you dont want to get paint on... and then just paint away with the brush. the kit i think is about $15.00 bucks or so. took me about 1 1/2 hour. cause i only had 2 jack stands. its pretty easy... 8)

I just grabbed "engine enamel" from an autoparts store... (more color varieties, even though I got black :)... as well as a can of Brakleen... about ten bucks altogether (and reusable...)

I pulled the calipers off the rotor but I didn't disconnect them from the brake lines. There are two bolts on the back side. Remove them and slide the caliper off the rotor. VERY easy.

Use a coat hanger and bend it up so you can hang the caliper.

I used a plastic grocery bag over the entire rotor assembly and rags over other critical areas.

I wish I had spent more time cleaning the caliper. (I had spots that the paint wouldn't stick to.) Try a fine wire wheel attached to a dremmel or drill.

Best of luck. Post up the final outcome!

I used Bestine to clean the parts while still attached to remove any dirt and oils - dries as fast as acetone but won't hurt any rubber parts. Even taking the calipers off the discs you'll have plenty of tape masking to do. ;)

I bought 1 can of Caliper Paint from Auto Zone (spray can - NOT a brush!) :o

Several really dry-misted coats first then a couple slower glossy coats. Still looks like new. :D

Thanks for the info on removing the calipers. I may try that route if I can find the bolts easily and have the proper size attachment for my socket wrench.

Also, a side note, I already purchased my paint (duracolor caliper kit) a long time ago, but thanks anyways for offering advice on paint.

I'll post pics and let you know how it went down after this weekend.

I got my duracolor kit at Autozone, same price as Wal-Mart and same thing. I just removed the wheels and painted each layer on each caliper. Just rotate around the car and it's so efficient because the other 3 calipers dry while you paint that one and so on. No need to remove, just jack, remove wheel, tape and paint!

P.S. I suggest safety glasses and crappy clothes because my new shoes got some red spots on them from the paint lol! Also, my safety glasses prevented some accidentalt splashes of paint from going into my eyes, thank goodnes I was wearing them!

LOL! Hey - we're not all as messy as you are! :D

But yeah, I got some :pink: overspray on my shoes and garage floor, so old shoes and pants are pretty good idea. Goes without saying when you're painting anything anyway! ;)
