Strong exhaust gas fumes smell??

Strong exhaust gas fumes smell??

Postby 99V6solaraSE » Mon Dec 29, 2008 1:44 am

So ive come home for the holidays from tech school with the Air Force, and finally got to drive around the solara.
its been 9 months roughly. My dad has been driving it every now and then to work and run errands to keep running.

But recently he mentioned a strong exhaust gas smell. I used to get it every now and then and itd go away. It was tolerable. But lately since ive driven it, it seem like its gotten worse. Havent quite pinpointed where from yet. Its pretty strong in the cabin at times. I drive with the windows open and vent it out. It doesnt seem to be coming from the vents. In fact having the vents open actually help vent it out the car better. I dont even know where to start.

I thought it might be my egr or something since i just used my stock one and made it fit. But the smell doesnt seem to be from the engine bay. Pretty strong in the back and the trunk. After what ive been reading online, many things have come up.

- might have something to do with the xerds since it eliminated the cat.
- fuel pump? bad injectors? lines?
- exhaust leak?
- still untuned as well.
- bad o2 sensor. ?

not quite sure where to start. any input would be appreciated.
the only CEL thats comes up is my insufficient egr flow that ive always had since the SC install cuz the pipe is kinda pinched off on a bend.
i gotta check again tomorrrow to make sure no other code has come up.

other than that car seems to be running strong, and gas mileage is pretty much the same. As long as i dont boost often or drive agressively.

I am not sure if I am correct but I seem to remember a bad charcoal canister producing a bad gas smell.

Is it an excessive fuel smell? a rotten egg smell?

BTW, congrats on going USAF...I'm a 1C551 myself.

Once again, awesome note on the USAF.

On the exhaust smell...can't say, is it inside the cockpit with the windows up or down (open vent might qualify as windows down too). Does the Haynes's manual say anything regarding exhaust smell symptoms?

its in the cockpit regardless if the windows are down or up.
I have to keep my windows open to vent the smell out.

I'd pull the rear seat and check the fuel pump area. You might also check the rubber fuel hose that connects the fuel tank to the metal line that runs up to the engine bay.

Could it be that the cats are blocked up and cause this?

dont have a cat with the xerds.
According to the haynes manual, im starting to think its a charcoal cannister or the evap system.
