When do you change ur brake and tires?

When do you change ur brake and tires?

Postby boaclub923 » Mon Sep 10, 2007 6:51 am

when do u change ur front and rear brakes?
as well as tires?
my front brake only last 30k, and 45k for the rear.
my factory bridgeston tires only last 30k as well.
after that, i put yokohama (i forget which model, but manufacture claim it last avg. 50k),
and i still change it at another 30k.
somehow, it seems like my brake and tires r wear out pretty fast.
when do you change ur brake and tires?
do i have bad driving hobbit? or everything die faster on solara?

also, i know tire wear out faster if you lower,
but how much faster? 20k? or still 30k?
anyone has any idea?

thx for info

When ever they wear out cheap crap is only good for 10-15K miles and OEM pads and rotors last 50+

I had Yoko's AV-ES100 last year...they last around 15k miles...stick the road as glue but melting also very fast. Any high performance tire will last not that long...all depends of the usage...I'm driving less aggressive this summer and my Toyo T1-R still have good shape...will propably be able to do 2 summer with those tires instead of just 1 summer with my Yoko's

I just changed my tires last week. I'm running Kumho Ecsta SPT 225/45/18 tires now and I love them! My car is at 42k miles. I changed my front and back rotors and pads at 35k miles, they last for a while.

As needed 8) . When the pad wear marker starts to make it squeal, I'll replace the brakes. When I can see the tread wear indicators, I'll replace the tires.

lol. . .

Maybe Frodo's getting a bit old to chauffeur? Maybe Bilbo needs a booster seat?

In all seriousness, brake pads should last around 45K miles with relatively hard driving. Rotors should last two to three pad changes, assuming you change the pads before the sensors gouge them beyond resurfacing.

"Performance" has more to do with "durability" than actual "quality" does... I use quotes for those words because it's a pretty complicated balance that is used. Basically, you have to sacrifice some performance if you want longer lasting, and some life span if you want performance... Unfortunately you cannot have both.

Performance oriented tires have stiffer rubber and compounds that break down faster than ordinary "daily driver" tires... Ironically, high cost in the tire world usually means shorter lasting as well, so you're hit from both angles... whereas you buy a cheap set of squishy road tires from Costco and they'll last you (and are usually warrantied) for 80K miles... For example, my Michelines that cost $300 EACH only lasted between 20-25K miles per set...

Brake pads fall along the same line... The materials used in higher performance pads are intended to STOP your vehicle as quickly as possible and maintain consistant stopping regardless of thermal conditions or wear, not to last long. Performance pads usually cause more brake dust, are shorter lived and are not as quiet during braking (more prone to the annoying squeels/squeeks). They also have a nasty tendency to score your rotors more, which leads to shorter rotor life as well... "Daily driver" oriented pads are usually a bit softer and use materials that allow for comfortable, quiet, long lasting performance. They may not stop your car as fast, and shouldn't really be used on a track, but they do their every day job.

I have 98k on my 04. I did the routine maintenance this past weekend and my original brake pads still have quite a bit of wear on them. I'm now on my 3rd set of tires. The original tires got a little over 30k on them...the 2nd set got around 62k...so we'll wait and see what the 3rd set does. It's all relative to how you drive...drive hard and stuff wears out a lot quicker. Where you are going isn't going anywhere...so take it easy and enjoy the ride.

Driving with some bit of sanity pays off. If you would check my car you would never believe it had that many miles on it. Granted 80% of my driving is on the interstate so that explains the brake pad wear. I keep my maintenance up...every 3k miles come hell or high water. Now my rotors do need to be turned but I'll hold off till I replace the pads. Now do we want to talk about cost per mile?
