Alright so i got my quote today for the custom Cold Air Intake... Probably around 300$ including labor/install. Not bad i guess. And i was advised immediately upon seeing my engine (the mechanic) that i need new headers. Plus i will see a nice HP gain from aftermarket headers anyway w/ the CAI. Sooooo what brands do you guys recommend? I'm not so interested in Stainless Steal only becuase i have a friend who had Stainless Steal and it cracked due to heat, and cold moister hitting it (puddle i believe) So i'm leaning towards something Ceramic Coated (not as worried about appearance vs. performance/quality) All your ideas and pix as well would be great =) thnx guys!

http://jpheadersexhaust.com/cgi-bin/jpp ... ta+Headers

That is probably the best available for the Solara

Um, not a chance in hell at that price.

Everyone here is now getting OBX headers and y-pipe. Like $400 shipped, and seem to be of pretty good quality.

I'm not sure why your friend's stainless steel headers cracked because i heard ceramic coating is more likely to crack. The coating retains heat within the headers so it keeps the engine bay temperature down but at the same time it doesn't allow the headers to cool down as fast as bare stainless steel and over time they are more prone to being cracked. I'm not sure if this is 100% true or not. As long as the welds are strong and solid then I wouldn't worry about the material too much. I'm using the OBX headers right now and have no problem with it so far. It's made entirely of stainless steel.

I am not a fan of ceramic 1 scratch and rust city.

The crack was more likely from cheap thin wall ebay special stainless headers. The kind that cost about 70 dollars on a civic.

Your choices for a v6 from most to least expensive

JPP ~$1600

OBX ~$400

Ebay NO Name special ~$225

Personally I would grab the OBX a few have dynoed them with great results. The JPP are nice but for $1600 you could get a lot more performance.

I would check HERE for more info because you are asking a lot of questions already answered about 50 times in the last 2 months.

Also I would probably finish a custom catback before I went for headers.

I was under the impression that the JPP were better for boosted applications. Aren't they 3in pipes?

I could be very wrong but I don't think OBX or JPP has a 3 inch down pipe. I know the ebay listings use to say they did but after a member asked them they took the measurement off the listing. I know both make a 3 inch catback. OBX basically cloned the JPP stuff when they made theirs. JPP annoys me selling solara exhaust with coated pipe and a magnaflow muffler for 600 bucks. I wish they at least went all stainless.

Ah... I guess I was thinking of that old information.

I thought it was all stainless? That's annoying.

Nope parts are ceramic coated mild steel. A very bad combination of you are in a salt area. At least that is my experience.

I really don't like the exhaust 700 dollars. The pipe in mild steel is worth about 60 dollars max the resonators are about 50 buck combined and the magnaflow mufflers can be had on ebay for about 150. Those are prices without volume discounts, it bothers me. The headers are over priced but they are very well designed. The catback is really nothing that special.

Quote from the jp site

Dyno proven to produce up to 20-35whp on '99 V6 5 speed Solara with a TRD Supercharger. Our headers use the highest quality T-304 stainless steel, CNC flanges, mandrel bent tubing and two stage ceramic coating. Also included is a ceramic coated mild steel Y-Pipe with a high-flow catalytic converter, mandrel bent tubing and stainless steel flex pipe. Precision welding techniques ensure excellent durability and accurate fitting to factory locations. Designed for use with our exclusive 3" cat-back but will work with most aftermarket exhausts.

JP Performance Cat-Back is designed to be quiet and powerful. Adding a full 13hp. over a typical 2 1/2-inch system when used with JP's Headers and still maintaining good noise characteristics. JP's 3 inch Cat-Back is a perfect compliment to either our Headers or Y-Pipes but will bolt up to a factory system and uses all the factory mounting points. Utilizing highest quality ceramic coated mild steel, mandrel bent tubing, two perforated resonators and a polished stainless steel Magnaflow muffler with a stainless steel tip.

sorry for the lack of searching. I'm doing this from my phone so it would be a lot more time consuming to search lol. your responses are much appreciated. I'm just looking for quality performance cu a good price. OBX is looking good right now!

It seems that the cloned JPP OBXs are holding up well for people and I plan to order a set here shortly too. Contemplating getting heat coating as well

ceramic coatings are to keep the exhaust gasses hoter. hot gas moves faster than cooler gas. side benefit,it keeps the engine compartment cooler.

Exhaust wraps are bad as they will lead to cracked headers, why I'd rather get ceramic coating
